This column will introduce you to the most popular movies that are coming out in theaters this weekend.
What movie will you see?
Annabelle: Creation
This is the prequel to 2014’s Annabelle and the fourth film in The Conjuring franchise. A doll makers daughter passes on, but her ghost asks for permission to enter a doll. Dun Dun Dun. Starring in the August horror movie are Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil), Anthony LaPaglia (damn, I haven’t seen this guy in a while), and more. David F. Sandberg directs the doll this time around. Sandberg has directed 2016’s Lights Out. Gary Dauberman, who wrote the screenplay for this, has also written 2017’s It. Dauberman is also signed on to write The Nun, which would then be the fifth Conjuring flick. Want some August horror? Then hit the theater to see this.
The Glass Castle
The Glass Castle is based on a true story and the book, which lasted 261 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. This film tells the story of Jeannette Walls’ family and her poverty-stricken upbringing. Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts are the leads of this film. I wonder if Brie and Naomi talked about King Kong. Destin Daniel Cretton directs this biographical drama. Cretton directed Short Term 12 in 2013, which also starred Brie Larson. The vibe I am getting from this trailer is a kinda sequel to Captain Fantastic. Anyway, go check this out.
The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature
These fury, friendly animals must stop the mayor from destroying their home only to build an amusement park. Lending their voices for this animated sequel are Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Jackie Chan, Peter Stormare, Bobby Cannavale, Sebastian Maniscalco, and more. Co-writing and directing these crazy animals or animators is Cal Brunker. Brunker directed Escape from Planet Earth, as well as directing The Nut Job 3. Don’t be nut job this weekend, go see The Nut Job.

Anyway, whether they are starring, lending their voices, or mocap performing, this cast includes, Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, and more. Directing and co-writing is Matt Reeves. What movie will you see this weekend?
CHIPS
Reasons to see this:
Why?!? Anyway, CHIPS is based on the late 70’s early 80’s TV show about two highway patrol cops in LA. Starring in this action comedy TV adaptation are Michael Pena, Dax (I can’t believe people hire this guy) Shepard, Adam Brody (Yoga Hosers. Right Emo Kev?), Ryan Hansen (Party Down, can we replace Shepard with Hansen?), Vincent D’Onofrio, Kristen Bell, and more. I just found out which director hired Dax Shepard…..yup, it’s Dax Shepard. Shepard has directed Hit and Run, starring himself. He is also writing and directing a Scooby-Doo movie. I wonder if he’ll hire himself to play Shaggy. If you’re a fan of Chips, then go see Chips.
Life
Reasons to see this:
A crew of astronauts study a sample collected from Mars that may determine life on Mars. However, things are not what they seem. Dun Dun Dun. Starring in this sci-fi thriller are Rebecca Ferguson (M:I 6), Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and more. Directing this space flick is Daniel Espinosa, who has worked with Reynolds before in Safe House. Espinosa has also directed Child 44. Get a Life and go see Life this weekend.
Power Rangers
Reasons to see this:
Based on the early 90’sTV show, this film adaptation is about a group of teenagers that acquire special “powers” to defeat evil. As far as the cast goes, the Rangers are pretty unknown, while Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, and Bill Hader land roles in this. The director of this reboot/remake is Dean Israelite. Israelite has directed 2015’s Project Almanac. If you are a fan of this franchise, then hit the theater this weekend.
Wilson
Reasons to see this:
Wilson is a neurotic middle-aged man who reconnects with his wife and meets his teenage daughter for the first time. Wilson is played by a volleyball. Kidding. Wilson is played by Woody Harrelson, while the rest of the cast includes Judy Greer, Laura Dern, Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm ), and more. Craig Johnson directs this comedy. Johnson wrote and directed The Skeleton Twins, which starred Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. Don’t let Wilson float away. Go see him in theaters.
Welcome to the December 7th edition of Working the Weekend with Luke, and what a weekend it was. Friday night was a fantastic daddy-daughter night as I surprised them when they came back from their mother’s house and I had put up Christmas decorations in and outside the house and also put up the tree and they went absolutely nuts. The reaction was even better than I had planned and we spent the rest of the evening watching a few Christmas flicks and then I read the Mickey Mouse Christmas Carol at bedtime. Pretty awesome stuff. Normally, this would have been my weekend with them, but I traded time with the ex to make sure I wouldn’t miss the yearly tradition that is…….
THE KUPKA CHRISTMAS PARTY
Now in its 11th year, this year’s bash was one of the best that I’ve been to. Don’t get me wrong, most of them are awesome, minus the one year that I crashed out way too early, slept for 10 hours, and missed the whole thing, but that’s not important right now. After the girls left, I took a short nap to make sure I had enough energy to survive the night because you always know you’re going to need it. I made the 2 1/2 hour drive from Peoria to the suburbs, getting in around 4:30. I like to arrive a little early for the tradition that Kupka and I have before the other guests arrive….
You’re damn right those are appletinis. We have a mutual affinity for Scrubs so for the past few years, we’ve indulged in J.D.’s favorite cocktail. Go ahead and judge me. They’re strong and they’re delicious. What?
Over the next few hours, more guests would arrive and I would engage in some great conversations about books or movies, how jobs and kids were and more, all the while enjoying numerous libations. Apparently, some of the conversations got quite deep.
The fun continued throughout the evening as more and more drinks were consumed. I know that’s a little difficult to imagine when anyone from Binge Media is involved, but when it’s me, Kupka, and this guy…….
….things are bound to get a little entertaining. We would discuss ideas for the site, and I’m sure some were just pure genius while others maybe not so much. Who am I kidding? All of the ideas from all of us are amazing. We then get the bright idea to record an impromptu Bingecast, but as luck would have it, a session was already in progress elsewhere, so the three of us
joined up with Law, Ammon, and Jack for what I’m sure will go down as one of the most epic podcasts ever made, from what I remember anyway. Make sure to listen in on the madness after you leave here as it has been posted. And honestly, it was a very cool thing for me as it was the first that I’ve been involved with since joining the team back in April, so thanks to the rest of the boys for including me.
I’m not going to pretend I remember what time that was, but all of a sudden, I do know it was late and people were gone, including Moreno sneaking out like a freaking ninja. And instead of Kupka heading to his own room to go to sleep, he passed out on the couch that I would normally sleep on and you ain’t moving that big bastard, so I just hit the floor and went out pretty quick.
But the fun never ends with just one day. Day two usually begins with a few yawns and a few questions about what happened and at what time did this person leave and more questions that most don’t know the answer to. Kupka was prepared for day two this year as the mimosas started flowing early, pretty much right after Moreno came back. Coincidence? And while the conversations were back to more awesomeness, we needed some awesomeness in the background, so we’re flipping through Netflix and I knew it when I saw it that this was going to get the day started…..
I hadn’t watched this all the way through in at least five years, and I don’t know why. I think I forgot how great this movie is, and I think I forgot how hot Vanessa Angel used to be.
So what movie can you throw on after that to keep the day rolling?
What better flick to watch before I have to get back in the car and make the trek back home? If you’ve never seen this, it’s classic 80’s as the Coreys are at the top of their game here. And yes, that is Heather Graham (in her first movie actually). And how clever is it in a car movie to name her Mercedes? 80’s genius.
By the time that was over, I knew it was about time to go, so it was a shower and out for me, but the Chicago crew was hanging for a bit longer as “Cards Against Humanity” was about to get going just as I was departing, so then I really knew if I ever wanted to make it home that I had to go at that moment.
Chalk up another epic night in Chicagoland and it was great to catch up with some old friends and also great to hang with Kupka and Moreno and talk with the boys on the Bingecast. I always look for this night to be one of my favorites of the year, and as usual, it didn’t disappoint.
