Batch and Logan are back, and this time Logan has a fellow New Jersey native in tow with the question master himself, Warren Minnix. Warren brings his video game love into the conversation after Batch and Logan give their positive (?) thoughts on Bloodshot. All three of them talk Legos. What they want. What they wanna see. What Logan thought of the Lego Masters finale. Warren recommends Indie Video Games. Batch and Logan gloat over the new season of the Challenge. What? CT is superhuman. It works for the show.

Welcome to another edition of the Binge Movie Aftertaste where Jason and I….
Ok, we are a few months shy of celebrating our one year anniversary doing the show, and I have already run out of ways to intro it. Maybe I need more beer. Anyway, this is another action packed show with highlights including Jason and I reviewing some films, a revisit of a childhood favorite, and talking mad shit about Steven Seagal.
Jason and I begin the show by pimping out the Binge Media merchandise store, with Jason saying he is shocked at just how many different types of content the site covers. We then go on to talk about a movie we both watched this week called House of Manson, which is directed by Brandon Slagle. We both decided we liked the movie enough to recommend it with just a few minor quips. Jason then pimps out a movie which has a whopping 56% on Rotten Tomatoes called Infini.
We then get Noah Danby on the line. And what an interview he turns out to be. He starts off talking about what it was like working on shows like Smallville, with an interesting bit on how the leads of these shows are kind of supposed to be the ring leaders. We then move on to when Danby worked on the Steven Seagal film Exit Wounds. Let’s just say we will never look at car windows the same again. Jason even adds a bit about how Seagal was supposed to work with Lance Henriksen, only to have Seagal put the kabosh on it.
Danby has much better things to say about Vin Diesel, who he worked with on the 2013 science fiction film Riddick. Diesel turned out to be a hell of a producer and star, taking his entire crew out to dinner prior to shooting. A pet project of Diesel’s, Danby reveals he remained a nice guy despite constantly fighting for the Riddick vision to remain. And then we proceed to talk even more shit about Steven Seagal.
All this plus Noah’s grand King of Hollywood vision, what Jason can expect when he finally picks back up on Danby’s show Defiance, what it was like meeting people like Arnold Schwarzenegger (complete with a fantastic impression) and Nicolas Winding Refn, and so much more. Thanks again to Noah for a hell of an interview, and he is invited back anytime.
From here, and after talking even more shit about Steven Seagal, Jason and I bring up 1987’s The Monster Squad, as I decided to revisit it in light of the backlash I received from my recent Grumblings column that mentioned it as a movie which hasn’t aged well. Somehow, this conversation moved on to discussions about Iron Man 3, Josh Trank, Jason’s review of the new Vacation movie, and we conclude by talking about remakes, as well as even more pimping of the site. Because, we are great employees.
Damn, it’s been a while since I’ve put that logo up, so it’s nice to be able to say welcome back to Working the Weekend with Luke. For the last few weeks, there’s been so much going on in the sports world that my Binge Sports columns have been substituting for this one in my normal Sunday slot. Don’t get me wrong. I love writing about sports, but it’s nice to branch out from time to time, and I do have some Binge Sports info for you, but we’ll get to that in a little while. But before I get to that announcement, I’d hate myself if I didn’t once again mention how sad I am about the death of Lauren Hill. I’ve been following her inspirational story from the start and I can never say enough about how this courageous young woman impacted me. If you missed my story on Friday afternoon, click HERE. RIP Lauren.
But what else have I been up to lately? I’m so happy you asked.
FURIOUS 7
This is exactly what an action movie is supposed to be….and more. Yeah, I know most of the guys have hit on it at one point or another over the past week, but I just couldn’t help but commenting on it. I’ll admit that when the series first started, I basically refused to see it. I don’t even think I saw the first one until maybe five years after it came out. But all of a sudden, they started to become guilty pleasures that I just couldn’t turn off. Was the acting the greatest? Come on…it was Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. But I was entertained. Give me Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez to boot. Yeah, I’m in. Then we throw in Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Eva Mendes in the sequel. A little more comedy and well…Eva Mendes. Sure, Tokyo Drift was the weakest in the series, but when the main cast reunited for the fourth installment, I was intrigued so I checked it out. And once again I was back in. And then you throw in The Rock and Gal Gadot and Gina Carano in the next couple flicks. Yeah, I’m in.
Then I hear that Kurt Russell has joined in. Jason Statham shows up as the new villain. Djimon Hounsou comes on board. Ronda Rousey gets a chick fight with Michelle Rodriguez. Yes please! And then tragedy strikes. In a cruel and way too ironic accident, Paul Walker dies in a freaking car crash. Wait, seriously? Now, whether or not you were a fan of Paul Walker is irrelevant. Was he the best actor in the world? Certainly not. But I’ll make the same point that Jack made on Tuesday. He was perfect for this franchise. His on-screen chemistry with Vin Diesel was fantastic. And if they had been a real life couple, he and Jordana Brewster could seriously have made some of the prettiest babies ever. On screen, this is where some of the great drama was in this film. There’s a real family element here now. Not just the “familia” stuff that Vin spouts about, but an actual man, woman, and children (minor spoiler) family. And this is really where the story gets you.
But before we get to that, let me get to the action without giving away too much. The first big fight scene between Statham and The Rock is just awesome, and I will tell you that Statham gets a Rock Bottom through a table. For you non-wrestling folks, you may not understand the reference, but as a fan, it was nice. Keep it real Dwayne! Were some of the stunts over the top? Of course they were. Did it work? Of course it did. Yeah, I know you’re all skeptical about the cars dropping out of a plane scene, but the ridiculousness is overshadowed by the brilliant comedy of Tyrese in this scene. Seriously, I don’t know what day he decided to not just be a singer, but I’m happy about the decision. He brings a different element to these movies and it’s been great. The back and forth between he and Luda is phenomenal and has been for a few movies now.
There’s almost too much to get to. There’s Kurt Russell, who you sometimes forget just how awesome he is until he pops up in movies from time to time these days. But he’s Kurt Russell, so you know it’s good. Fun fact: they tried to get Denzel but he declined. Of course, there’s the revenge story of Han. And kudos to Lucas Black for making an appearance. Then you’ve got the Dom-Leti relationship and her memory loss. Yes, the result is pretty much impossible, but it’s a nice ride (pun intended) to get where we get to with that.
But the end is really what the movie is about. After Walker’s death, I was so curious on how they could finish things up, but I don’t think it could have gone any more perfectly. Before I give the ending away, I’m going to stop and just say that you’re not supposed to get emotional at anything having to do with this franchise. You’re supposed to go to the movies for a couple hours and just have some fun and not think about anything. But knowing what you know when you go in, you can’t help but get choked up at certain points. And the very end…forget about it. It’s the perfect tribute with some perfect words from Vin Diesel. I never thought I’d write that sentence, but it’s the truth. Now I know the plan is to make three more, but I wish they would leave it alone. For a blockbuster, it really does give you everything. It would be the perfect ending to one of the most successful franchises in cinematic history.
Wow, where do I go from there?
Well, I finally made the jump. DirecTV is gone and I’m now for the most part a streaming-only kind of guy.
I went out and bought the Roku 3 and it’s what I run just about everything through. You’d think they were paying me, but they’re not, but I highly recommend this for anyone who’s not using the smart TV. It’s got the ability to run all the channels and services that you’re looking for, but I’ve found that I really don’t need that much.
As of right now, these are really the only ones that I need. Netflix is well….Netflix. I wish they had more newer movies to stream, but if you’re looking to binge a television show, this is the place for you. They’ve got just about everything you’re looking for on that end, not to mention their own original programming like The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was absolutely fantastic.
Hulu Plus lets me keep up with some of the broadcast stations, which I can still get with a little in-house antennae that I bought. But if I’m looking for Saturday Night Live or The Last Man on Earth (which is great), then I can find them here. You do have to deal with a few ads, but it’s really not that bad.
Sling TV gives me the rest. This is where I can get my ESPN, TBS, TNT, and AMC. You know I need my sports and my Better Call Saul. The original package is only $20 per month, but you can add more channels if you want to pay a little more. Overall, though, it’s really worth the price.
Overall, I’ve cut my bill by more than half every month. I have all the content I really need and I don’t have to worry about a storm screwing up my dish. I should have done this a long time ago. Welcome to 2015 Luke. Idiot.
Now, I know this one isn’t for everybody, but I also pay the $9.99 per month for my WWE Network. If you’re a wrestling guy or gal, just do yourself a favor and sign up already. I’ve had it for a few months now, and I’ve been kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Not only do you get every single pay-per-view that comes up, but they have every single one from the past. Every. Single. One. Just get on it. It’s worth it.
And that leads me to the big announcement.
Well, due to the great response from the Wrestlemania podcast, the Binge Sportscast will now be a regular thing here at Binge Media. I know, how many more can we fit in, right? But I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to do this. I can’t tell you that it will be a weekly thing on a certain day, but when big events are happening, I’ll be there to cover it. One definite is that Batch and I will be doing a monthly wrestling podcast right around PPV time. I’m not sure whether we’re going to do it before or after each show, but we’re working on the format now. I don’t have a definite date just yet, but Kupka and I will be bringing you constant coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so we’re excited about that. I’m also working on finding a co-host for the NBA Playoffs podcast, so stay tuned for that as well. Since I started doing the Better Call Saul show with Kupka and Jack, I’ve been having a blast. Throw in the fun that I had with Batch for the premiere of the Binge Sportscast, and I can see why all these guys want to do it all the time. So that’s the big news, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
Wow. That was a lot to get to. But hey, I had to make up for the last few weeks. I’m sure you understand. So what do you think about all of what I just talked about? Did you love Furious 7 as much as I did? Do you have stories about cutting the cord? Are you on board with the new Binge Sportscast? Is there something coming up you’d like me to cover? Let me know below or find and follow me on Twitter @THElukenorris and @BingeSports. Believe me, you’ll be seeing a lot of me coming up as the NBA and NHL Playoffs get underway this week. I’ll see you soon.
If you listen to the BingeCast, then you know I like putting together a little impromptu segment called Trailer Round-Up every once in a while… like, every once in a while a new movie trailer comes around and I watch it and want to talk about. This week is no different, but I decided to throw it together in an article because by the time we record again… I’ll likely have forgotten all about it.
FURIOUS 7
I pride myself in being a FAST & FURIOUS connoisseur, as I have seen every film in the franchise multiple times and love every single one of them. The trailer for James Wan’s FURIOUS 7 smashed the internet over the weekend and holy shitballs, consider my mind blown! From the ridiculous action sequence in the beginning (parachuting muscle cars!) ending with Paul Walker hanging off the edge of a cliff on a spoiler, to seeing Kurt Russell and Jason Statham be total and complete badasses, everything about the trailer brought forth what I love about the franchise (racing! scantly clad women!)… and promised to give us a little something different (is vengeance different? I guess it is). Plus, with Vin Diesel gives a couple of speeches (“the sins of London have followed us home” and “I don’t have friends, I got family”) and yet another ass-kicking fight sequence with The Rock (plus mini-gun Rock and breaking cast off his arm Rock), let’s just say… April can’t get here soon enough. I’m in!
MINIONS
DESPICABLE ME is a fun movie–surprisingly cute with heart to match. And those damn Minions are a big part of the appeal… or so I thought until DESPICABLE ME 2 came out. The focus was on the Minions far more than the first movie… and the end result wasn’t nearly as good (or as cute) as you would have expected. Turns out it’s the damn kids in the movie that gave it so much heart, but whatever. Now we have a trailer for MINIONS, the first of the series to focus specifically on the Minions (a prequel to DM and DM 2), and while DM2 left a sour taste in my mouth… I gotta admit, this shit looks pretty goddamn funny. I’m digging the history of the Minions, latching on to the most evil thing on the planet until they advertently mess things up by killing them on accident (the Dracula and the Napolean bits are priceless). Not sure where they go from there in NYC in the ’60s, but… I’m in! Should be a flippin’ blast! Plus, their fascination with Bananas never gets old.
CHAPPIE
Here’s one I knew nothing about until the trailer popped online this week. Then I saw posts about Neill Blomkamp’s new sci-fi robot movie starring Hugh Jackman and all I could think of… where the hell did this movie come from? So then I checked out the trailer and it turns out it’s another movie where a robot shows more emotion than the entire cast of a Michael Bay movie, where the future appears great but has some serious technology issues, and damn it all to hell if I didn’t immediately latch on to Chappie… and want Jackman and his lame-ass mullet hairdo dead. I can already tell this is gonna make just about everyone in the theater cry… and hope for painful deaths to all the humans involved. Looks fantastic–can they nominate robots for Academy Awards? If so, I’d say this one has some serious potential.
I didn’t see the GRUMPY CAT trailer, but I read all about Jack’s take on it HERE and all I can say is… wow. Where the fuck is Dog Spiders already?
PLOT: There’s a new rule in the galaxy: No one touches Earth! But why has Earth suddenly become the most important planet in the galaxy? That’s what the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to find out! Join Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and – wait for it – the Invincible Iron Man as they embark upon one of the most explosive and eye-opening chapters of Marvel NOW! The secrets these galactic Avengers discover will rattle Marvel readers for years to come! But while London deals with a brutal invasion by the Badoon, the fate of the Guardians may have already been decided millions of miles away! Why wait for the movie? It all starts here! Collects Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #1-3 & #0.1 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow’s Avengers #1.
REVIEW: In preparation for the new movie, I am reading through some Guardians of the Galaxy graphic novels to further my knowledge. I was not familiar at all with the group of superheroes until recently, so all of this is very new to me. As some of you know, I’m not much of a fan of the titles in Marvel NOW! except for a few. Granted, I wasn’t a fan of many Marvel titles previous to the major reboot, but I thought I would pick up a few more favorites during the NOW! initiative. This was one of the late books to come out of it, and I was so surprised that this was the real winner of the running titles. I’ve read everything from X-Men to Avengers, and Hulk back to Iron Man, Cap, and Thor. This Guardians of the Galaxy book has it all, and is probably one of the more, if not the most, complete book or first volume I’ve read from the reboot group. Thor may be at a tie with it, but it doesn’t quite have the “fun factor” this book has and while it does not suffer for it, it’s just an element of a comic that you sometimes want to have. This book also includes a large collection of cover variants and such in the back, so don’t forget to leave the book open after the last page of the comic book itself. Some of the Deadpool variants are fantastic. As you can see on the front cover as well, Iron Man is in this book too for added shenanigans and laughs.
Cosmic Avengers’ strength though is that it is extremely funny and the equivalent of a blockbuster popcorn flick in book form. It presents an intergalactic story with new characters (for some) and does it all within four issues which is really spectacular. Most volumes or collections of comics have at least five issues in them to tell a story, and sometimes the introductory volumes can be even larger. What this book accomplishes in four issues is amazing, and that is why I would recommend this book to anyone, whether you read comics or not. It is the total package, and it starts with one of my single favorite issues in the Marvel NOW! era. The first issue is #0.1 and is the story of how Star-Lord a.k.a. Peter Quill came to be, and it is done so well. It captures you interest from the get-go, and that issue leads right into the current story with the Guardians and holds you all the way until the end. This book will make you laugh, as Groot saves the day and Rocket “Blam! murdered you”’s everyone. This book will make you cry (if you’re weak like me), as Groot saves the day and Peter grows up without a father. This book will make you read and pay attention to every detail, because the Guardians of the Galaxy are awesome and Brian Michael Bendis is one of the Marvel masters behind this book. A must read for fans and outsiders alike, and an excellent introduction to a new favorite group of heroes come August 2nd.
PLOT: Launching out of Annihilation: Conquest, Marvel’s sci-fi heroes unite to protect the cosmos. Back-to-back Annihilation wars have weakened the boundaries of our universe. Dark gods and monsters are seeping through the cracks, reigning horror upon those still reeling from the recent calamities. In the face of terror, who stands to defend a desperate universe? Star-Lord and his squad of butt-kickers – the modern day Guardians of the Galaxy. You’ve heard that Annihilation: Conquest rocks – the guy at the comic shop keeps telling you to try Nova – well, now’s your chance to experience the glory that writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, and artist Paul Pelletier can unleash. All this…plus a wise-cracking raccoon and a telepathic dog. C’mon, people, time to lock and load Collecting Guardians of the Galaxy #1-6.
REVIEW: So it probably doesn’t help that I read the Marvel NOW! Guardians title first, but I didn’t enjoy this book nearly as much as that. I was disappointed because I purchased this one to brush up before the movie, but the other I borrowed from the library. I’d like to trade this one in for the other, but this book is not without its plusses. I think one of the major reasons this wasn’t entertaining for me is that I have not read the event that took place before this book to kind of set it up. The Guardians team assembled in this book is also a little different than that of the movie coming out, or in the NOW! team. All of the normal people are there, but there is also Quasar, Warlock, and a telepathic dog. Yeah, a telepathic dog. It’s definitely on the spacey wacey type of mojo that typically dominates older Marvel titles, which is yet another reason I’m more of a fan of the DC Universe. However, I did mention those plusses and it would be fair to share those too before the book has been completely ruined.
As usual, Rocket Raccoon dominates every frame and page he’s on. His humor in these books is just so doom and gloom, but with a hint of sarcasm to make it hilarious. He’s really much funnier in the newer books, but he had a great running joke throughout the second issue of this book. While they are trying to figure out their team name, he can be spotted every other frame or two suggesting names and bugging the other team members. Eventually they just give in to get him and shut up, but its his persistence despite the team’s reaction to him that draws the laughs. The main plot really isn’t as great as in Cosmic Avengers, but from what I’ve read there seems to be some basis in here for the movie coming out. I’m not sure what they’ll use, but I’d imagine if anything it will probably be very lightly lifted from this book. I think the new book benefits from the existence of the movie, as it was created after the movie’s inception. This volume of Guardians of the Galaxy by Dan Abnett is hard to find right now, but it appears that it will be published in trade paperback for the release of the new film. It’s a pretty well-reviewed volume or Marvel stuff, so if space, time, and superheroes in the Marvel Universe is your thing, I’d still give this a shot. I’m just not huge on the extraterrestrial realms of Marvel, and I think that is why the NOW! title exceeds this one because it is accessible to any reader unlike this one.
