When I was 13 years old, I started watching football. At the time, there was a lot of strife and stress around me (more than a kid that age should have to deal with in hindsight) and football was an outlet for me. This predated my discovery of the film world and gave me something to look forward to week after week. The year was 2001 and it was immediately after 9/11 that I remember getting together around the TV once a week to sit and root for the New England Patriots, a team led by quarterback Drew Bledsoe, a guy whose name I was familiar with from passing conversation. I remember watching that first game where Bledsoe went down and being pretty much lost, as his was the only name I knew on the team. Of course, this was the game where backup quarterback Tom Brady took the field against the AFC East rival New York Jets. The Pats lost that game 10-3, but the subsequent season saw the Patriots rallying to get to the Super Bowl, and for the first time in the event’s history, choosing to be introduced as a team.
There was something that even to this day gives me chills about the Pats taking the field here. The focus on team effort and performance was front and center, and the Pats went on to their first Super Bowl victory in team history. Within the following three years they would win two more.
I’ve been lucky to grow up at this time in Boston sports history. I’m no huge Sox fan, but I love going to Fenway. The Bruins are what they are, and again, not big on hockey but I enjoy watching a game now and again. The Celtics, never really been much into basketball either. All that being said, Boston and New England has been spoiled over the past 15 years, and I have to believe it was rekindled with this first Super Bowl win. The Pats have been consistent, quality and dominant for a long time, but their two Super Bowl losses, in the eyes of many, were chinks in the armor, proving that despite all the effort, the Pats were human after all.
I remember watching the first Pats/Giants Super Bowl and experiencing the David Tyree helmet catch in disbelief. I still can’t believe that catch happened, but it did, and it was a hell of a play. It sucked for us, but it was a hell of a play, I would never take that away from the guy. Then the second Bowl where we gave the Giants a safety that ended up being the death-blow was also crushing, but admittedly not as much as the first one was. So cut to this past Sunday, where the emotion, intensity and dedication to this team reached its apex.
Much like the Seahawks, the Patriots are, in their better seasons, a team of athletes. Everyone has a part to play in order to secure the win, and I think this Super Bowl proves that the team has to be able to perform and do their job when asked to. I give credit to the Seahawks and Pete Carroll for sticking to their in-your-face aggression for all 60 minutes. I can even understand why he called the throw at the end of the game instead of handing the ball off to Beast Mode for the go-ahead touchdown given the situation he was facing. You had a classic case of a player making a world-class play when he had to, and that is just the way it goes. It sucks, Hawks fans, and I almost feel for you, but talk to me when you get robbed in two different Super Bowls then I’ll try and squeeze out a fucking tear for you.
It was a big game that could have easily gone the other way, but it didn’t. Ammon, here and now, hats off to the team. Seriously, this is no bullshit. I really thank you for the competition and most of all for Michael Bennett jumping over the line and helping us secure the win in the end. Also, for allowing Russell Wilson to make that bonehead throw and cost you the game and/or the rarefied air the Patriots exist in of winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Most of all, thank you for this:
Luckily, this is it for a while on Pats talk, so I’ll be back to my usual bullshit next week. Binge on!
I know you’re upset for not seeing my usual logo for the second week in a row, but hey, it’s Super Bowl Sunday, so what do you expect me to do? Yes, the Oscar series is still a thing and will return next Sunday. So what exactly is on tap today? Well, I know your evening is pretty much tied up, but before the Seahawks and Patriots do battle, I want to give you the results of the fan vote in advance, reveal the squares board for the Binge Media t-shirt contest, and hype Binge Bowl 2015. So let’s get after it while you’re still sober. Maybe.
FAN VOTE
Patriots-54%
Seahawks-46%
This is pretty much the consensus throughout the country. The Patriots still come in as a slight favorite and they’re a slight favorite here as well. We’re so mainstream.
BINGE BOWL 2015
Binge Media invites you to join us on Twitter as Jack and Ammon get after one another from opposite sides of the country. It’s actually already started with a few great tweets out of the gate, so head over and use the hashtag #bingebowl to join in the conversation. I’m sure I’ll be chiming in at some point and you know you can always find me @BingeSports or @THElukenorris, so look for my hilarity later on during Binge Bowl 2015. I should start another vote on the first one to stop spelling things correctly.
SUPER BOWL SQUARES (BINGE MEDIA T-SHIRT CONTEST!!)
The board is full and your square is ready to go. I will tell you that we are a bunch of cheap assholes and have put our own names on the board. Hell, if you really look at it, you’ll see two squares with only a letter in it that my daughters wrote in. Don’t blame me…you should have responded sooner. But seriously, good luck to all those who threw their name in. As a reminder, there will be a winner at halftime and a winner at the end. Just so I don’t get yelled at, the second winner will be the FINAL score. If overtime is involved, it will not be the score at the end of the fourth quarter. Just clarifying before someone gets stupid.
I’d like to be able to tell you that there was a scientific system for filling this board instead of just closing my eyes, pointing to a name on the list I made, and then pointing to a square, but there wasn’t. That’s exactly what I did and takes longer than you might think, so suck it up buttercup. So take a minute to locate your square and enjoy your Super Sunday. We’ll be contacting the winners for shirt size and address later this week. GO SPORTS TEAM!!! Again, The Lego Movie got screwed. Good luck.
And here we go. Welcome to Binge Media and welcome back to Binge Sports’ coverage of the NFL Playoffs. We’ve got one game to go for all the marbles. Super Bowl XLIX. It’s the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks. As usual, I’ll give you a quick breakdown of the teams and how they got here and as always, you’ll have a chance to vote on who you think wins this Sunday. But a special event like this calls for a little extra.
Most of you reading this are probably familiar with a squares board. It’s 100 squares with one team listed on the side and one team listed on the top. As soon as I get 100 of you signed up, I’ll run the numbers 0-9 at random on both sides and draw each name at random for your spot on the board. As you can see below, the board is ready to go. I’m just waiting on you.
All you have to do to enter is put your name in the comments section, or enter your name on the Binge Media facebook pageor @BingeMedia, @BingeSports, or @THElukenorris on Twitter. The first 100 get in so I suggest getting to it quickly as I’m sure the squares will fill up fast. There will be two winners, one at halftime and one at the end of the game. Each winner will receive their very own Binge Media T-shirt. Aren’t we so damn nice?
I suppose you want to talk about the game now. Let’s get to it.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (14-4, AFC CHAMPIONS)
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (14-4, NFC CHAMPIONS)
HOW THEY GOT HERE:
New England: 1st round bye, def. Baltimore 35-31, def. Indianapolis 45-7
Seattle: 1st round bye, def. Carolina 31-17, def. Green Bay 28-22
WHEN: Sunday, February 1, 2015-6:30 Eastern/5:30 Central/4:30 Mountain/3:30 Pacific
WHERE: University of Phoenix Stadium-Glendale, Arizona
TV: NBC
CURRENT BETTING LINE: Patriots favored by 1
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: For the same reason everyone else does. For the commercials. Okay, maybe that’s not the entire truth as this should be a very, very good football game. I’ll spare you the X’s and O’s of the game as I know ESPN has that covered on a minute-to-minute basis, I mean, when they’re not talking about the deflation of footballs. Seriously, are you as sick of this story as I am? I refuse to spend one more second talking about it, so that’s my take on Deflate-gate.
It’s the biggest game of the year with some of the game’s biggest stars. Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, Rob Gronkowski, and the always entertaining Marshawn Lynch. To be honest with you, I have no rooting interest in this game. I want an entertaining contest, but with that said, the only reason I’d like to see Seattle win is to give Marshawn Lynch a chance at the MVP, just so he has to give the live interview at the end.
I really don’t have a prediction for you as I think this really is going to be a great game. The Seattle defense is absolutely great, giving up an average of only nine points per game over their eight game winning streak. But the Patriots are averaging forty points so far in these playoffs. We should be in for one hell of a football game. But hey, we all said that last year too. What’s your call?
[yop_poll id=”170″]
So there you have it. I’ll announce the poll results soon after the game. As I said, as soon as I get 100 people signed up, I’ll fill up that board and get it up on the website so you know what your numbers are. So get those votes in and get me your name. Good luck.
And don’t forget about the halftime show with Katy Perry. Note to self: put it on mute and pray for another wardrobe malfunction.
Before I get to this weekend’s action in the NFL, I wanted to let you know how you did in the voting for the College Football Playoff National Championship this past Monday night between Oregon and Ohio State. In another exciting college football game that broke tons of records, the Buckeyes were victorious 42-20. In the final poll results, 42% of you voted for Ohio State to win. Admittedly, I was not one that voted that way. I didn’t think that they could keep up, but Urban Meyer had that team ready to play. Believe me, it pains me to say this as a Michigan fan, but that win was impressive. But as a fan of the game and of the Big 10, I couldn’t help but respect it. Congrats to the Ohio State Buckeyes. But still, GO BLUE!!!!
Now let’s get to the pro action.
We’re down to four teams left on the road to Arizona. After an exciting and controversial weekend of action (for some anyway), we’re left with a solid final four in the NFL. But before I go on, let me just get something out of the way. As a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, I’ve been asked all week on my thoughts on how the game ended on Sunday afternoon, obviously referring to the Dez Bryant play. And honestly, it doesn’t really matter what I think, does it? I absolutely love sports and I love the teams that I root for and I always will. But seriously, if you let the outcome of a football game ruin your day or ruin your week, then you’ve got problems. Look at what I wrote above. As someone who roots for Michigan, I just congratulated Ohio State. Does that make me a bad fan? Does it make me a bad fan that I haven’t put up fifty memes about the Dez Bryant catch? No, it just means that I can watch a game, be absolutely caught up in the emotions that sports can bring out, but when that final buzzer sounds, I can let it go. Maybe that’s not for everybody, but hey, it works for me. So with that being said, I can still say that I’m excited for some great football this weekend, even with my team being out of it. I’ve always tried to be fair and impartial as your Binge Sports guy, so let me take another crack at it. We’ll start with the early game in the NFC, but before that, take a look to see how you did in the divisional round.
New England-def. Baltimore 35-31 (81% voted correctly)
(2) GREEN BAY PACKERS (13-4, won NFC North)
@
(1) SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (13-4, won NFC West)
WHEN: Sunday, January 18th, 2015-3:05ET/2:05CT
TV: FOX
Current Line: Seahawks favored by 7
Why You Should Watch: Because this is the game that was expected to happen from the start of the year. Hopefully, we’ll get a better contest than the one we had to start the season. Also played in Seattle, the Seahawks bested the Packers by 20 in Week 1. But there’s been a lot of football between then and now.
Similar to last week, the question of the week will be the status of Aaron Rodgers’ calf injury. He battled through last week to defeat the Dallas Cowboys, but as good as they were, that defense isn’t that of the Seahawks, who’ve been on a tear as of late.
The home field advantage obviously helps Seattle on Sunday, who always rely on “The 12th Man” for that extra edge. Having Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch playing at the level they’ve been playing at doesn’t hurt either. It’s going to be hard to beat that Packers-Cowboys game last week, but if any two teams can do it, it’s these two. Expect a classic if Rodgers can go.

(4) INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (13-5, won AFC South)
@
(1) NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (13-4, won AFC East)
WHEN: Sunday, January 18th, 2015-6:40ET/5:40CT
TV: CBS
Current Line: Patriots favored by 7
Why You Should Watch: Because you either love or hate the Patriots. Like it or not, New England has become one of those franchises, pretty much the Yankees of the NFL. There’s guys like our very own Jack who live and breathe that team, and there’s those that will tune in to watch them lose. The question is whether or not Andrew Luck is ready to grab that brass ring.
Let’s face it. The Patriots are going to do what they’ve always done. Brady and Belichick are in their ninth AFC Championship together and they’ll be ready to go. But Andrew Luck and the Colts just went to Denver and beat Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Granted, Manning was injured and doesn’t have the best playoff history in the world, but still impressive nonetheless. With Brady and Manning getting older, Luck has been on the fast track to being the elite quarterback in the AFC. A win in Foxboro on Sunday speeds that up even more. It should be fun to watch.
[yop_poll id=”169″]
And there you have it. We’re in for another great day of football. It’s high profile teams with high profile players. Who’d you pick? As always, you can comment below or follow and tweet @BingeSports and/or @THElukenorris. Binge Sports will return soon with a Pro Bowl preview. I’m completely kidding…nobody watches the Pro Bowl. But I’ll definitely be back before the Super Bowl. Enjoy.
Welcome back to Binge Sports and our continuing coverage of the NFL Playoffs. Outside of the Dallas/Detroit game, Wild Card Weekend wasn’t quite as exciting as I expected it to be, but hey, what are you gonna do? But look at the match-ups we’ve got this weekend. Iconic franchises and future Hall-of-Famers are everywhere on Saturday and Sunday. As I did last weekend, I’ll give you the teams, how they got here, when the game is, the betting line (at least as it is when I write this), and a quick breakdown. I’ll also show you how you did in the voting last week and of course, I’ll give you another chance to vote on this week’s winners. So let’s not waste any more time. Let’s make Jack happy and lead off with the first game on Saturday….
(6)BALTIMORE RAVENS (10-6, 3rd in AFC North)
@
(1)NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (12-4, won AFC East)
When: Saturday, January 10th, 2015-4:35E/3:35C-NBC
WC Weekend: New England-bye, Baltimore-def. Pittsburgh 30-17 (9% voted correctly)
Current Line: New England favored by 7
Why You ShouldWatch: Because the Ravens can actually win this game. They went on the road and beat a Steelers team that had been a role and did it fairly easily. That gave the franchise ten road victories in the playoffs, tying them with Green Bay for the most in NFL history. What makes that even more impressive is that they’ve only been in existence since 1996. One of those wins happened in Foxboro only two years ago in the AFC Championship game. But the Patriots are well rested and one of the hottest teams in the league. They won ten of their last twelve, but that includes resting their starters in the season finale against Buffalo. Both teams know what it takes to win these big games and this is a nice start to the weekend.

(4)CAROLINA PANTHERS (7-8-1, won NFC South)
@
(1)SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (12-4, won NFC West)
When: Saturday, January 10th, 2015-8:15E/7:15C-FOX
Why You Should Watch: Because both of these teams have exciting, mobile quarterbacks, good defense, and both are on a hot streak. Carolina comes in having won five in a row and are only allowing about twelve points per game during that stretch. Not to be outdone, the Seahawks enter this game having won six in a row and have only allowed 6.5 points per game during their stretch. Seattle also has the advantage of playing at home. “The 12th Man” should be rocking on Saturday night. The defending champions have only lost two games at home over the past two years and come in as a pretty heavy favorite in this game.
[yop_poll id=”164″]
(3)DALLAS COWBOYS (12-4, won NFC East)
@
(2)GREEN BAY PACKERS (12-4, won NFC North)
When: Sunday, January 11th, 2015-1:05E/12:05C-FOX
WC Weekend: Green Bay-bye, Dallas-def. Detroit 24-20 (78% voted correctly)
Current Line: Green Bay favored by 6.5
Why You ShouldWatch: Because it’s the Cowboys and the Packers. Two of the most iconic franchises in sports renew their rivalry in the opening game on Sunday afternoon. It won’t exactly be “The Ice Bowl”, but it’s going to be cold in Green Bay at game time, topping out in the high teens. But this is one hot match-up. The Packers had last week off and that should benefit Aaron Rodgers, who had some time to recover from the nagging calf injury. The Cowboys come in after a hell of a game against the Lions and will have to adjust to the weather. And in a situation we don’t see very often, the Packers are 8-0 at Lambeau this year, but Dallas was 8-0 on the road. Expect another classic.
Why You Should Watch: The storyline is pretty easy here. It’s Peyton Manning playing his old team and their new golden boy, Andrew Luck. And Luck looked very good once again in their defeat of the Bengals last weekend. There’s been a lot of football played in between this match-up and the Week 1 encounter between these two teams, which Denver won 31-24 after a late surge by Indianapolis. Is this Peyton Manning’s last ride? Is this the day that the torch is truly passed? We’ll find out in the last game of the weekend.
