Binge Sports: The Best of 2014
It all started with that egotistical logo you see above…and I’m okay with that. There’s a reason I still use it. But I digress. Welcome to a look back at the year that was Binge Sports. Okay, it actually wasn’t a full year as I didn’t start here until April, but you get the gist. And don’t worry, I won’t be boring you to death with full recaps, but what I will do is put up a few pics of some of the things I covered, give you a few links to go back and read some of your favorites. Or if there’s something you see that you may have missed, especially early on, you can get all caught up at start fresh in 2015. So let’s go back to the beginning…………..
The beginning of Binge Sports started HERE
The fan votes kicked into high gear with full coverage of the NHL and NBA Playoffs
The first in a three-part series started with the 25th anniversary revisit of Field of Dreams. Check it out HERE
.Also celebrating its 25th was Major League. Read the revisit HERE
After a fan vote to decide the winner, I created a fictional scenario where Rick Vaughn squared off with Shoeless Joe Jackson. This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written, and you can check it out HERE
I gave you my favorite Disney sports movies HERE. I then put it to you to vote for your favorite and you chose….
Okay, it’s Remember the Titans, but I just like putting up pictures of Hayden Panittiere. Sue me. But you can actually read the full revisit of the flick HERE.
I surprised everyone HERE with yet another 25th anniversary revisit, the classic Hulk Hogan movie No Holds Barred.
I took on the challenge of unfamiliar territory and covered the entire FIFA World Cup. I’d never written about soccer before, but I honestly had a great time with it.
On the 20th anniversary, I took a look back at the events of June 17, 1994 including the infamous White Bronco chase. Read what else happened that day HERE
I covered the MLB All-Star Game from Minnesota and also gave you my top 5 favorite moments in All-Star Game history. Bo Jackson and Ted Williams on the same list. Check out the other videos HERE
Not just one topic HERE, but a little hodgepodge that included the Dustin Johnson scandal, the Jim Thome tribute, and the NFL Hall of Fame class.
Even before all of the hoopla this offseason, I wrote about the future of the Chicago Cubs. Check it out HERE.
Baseball said goodbye to Derek Jeter and Paul Konerko. Get my take HERE
And the world said goodbye to one of baseball’s brightest young stars. Read up on the all too short career of Oscar Taveras HERE.
Click HERE to read about The Rumble in the Jungle on its 40th anniversary. You can also watch the fight in its entirety.
It’s all about the U! At least it is in The U: Part 2, another amazing film in ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary series. Read my review HERE.
The countdown and fan vote for the inaugural College Football Playoff began with this picture. It continues with this….
There is currently a fan vote going on for the two games happening tomorrow. Click HERE to read my previews for the Sugar Bowl and the Rose Bowl and make your picks in college football’s final four.
But for me, the biggest and best story of the year doesn’t concern the biggest sporting event in the world, LeBron’s return to Cleveland, or The Captain’s farewell, but instead involves a courageous young woman that we’d never heard of……
Lauren Hill.
If you haven’t read up on this amazing young woman that lived out her dream of playing college basketball, despite the fact she has an inoperable brain tumor. Read about her first and what was supposed to be her last game HERE.
If that wasn’t enough, read up on her second game HERE.
But she still wasn’t done. Click HERE to read the article about her third game, a piece that ESPN contacted us about. This girl is so inspiring. Seriously, if you didn’t read anything else from Binge Sports this year, read the last three. It will restore your faith in people and remind you why sports can be so damn great.
I want to thank each and every one of you who took the time to read Binge Sports this year. As much fun as I have with Working the Weekend with Luke, and I do, sports is the reason I was brought on. I look forward to some more great stories in 2015, and I promise to bring my very best when bringing you the coverage. We’ll start right after the new year as I get going with wall-to-wall coverage of the NFL Playoffs, which of course will bring more fan votes each and every round.
But until then, what was your favorite sports moment of 2014? Let me know below or hit me up @BingeSports and/or @THElukenorris. Happy New Year from Binge Sports, where we’ve got all the balls.
