When The Music Hits: Langhorne Slim & The Law

I seem to have picked all the winners for this summer of concerts. This evening I had the pleasure of taking in Langhorne Slim and The Law with a very interesting trio called Nineteen Thirteen. This evening ended up like many of the others thus far, amazing.

It’s Alright To Get A Little Happy Along The Way

While still north we kept it in Illinois this time at a little venue called Space in Evanston. The opening act was a trio called Nineteen Thirteen which feature a cellist, and two percussionists. I gave their 4 track E.P. Infinite Prelude a listen when I found they were the opener and enjoyed what I heard and was very curious as to how they would play live. The answer is quite damn well. One of my favorite sets ever, aside from thanking everyone before their last song they came out and let their music do their talking for them. A band that I guess would be deemed a Jazz band but not in the chaotic manor that is typically associated with Jazz, at least that’s how I always think of Jazz. Watching drummers Scott Johnson and Victor DeLorenzo was very entertaining as they attempted to playfully out duel each other at every given moment while cellist Janet Schiff gave the overall direction of this musical journey. They are just an absolute delight to witness and I recommend you do so if you can. You can find out more about Nineteen Thirteen here.

Next up we had Langhorne Slim and The Law. Now I was introduced to Langhorne a couple of years ago when he was still doing solo work but never got a chance to see him when he came around. Well this time I had the chance and I jumped all over it. A sold out show and for the most part it seemed to be an evenly mixed blend of die hards and new fans. Which I enjoyed because it meant I wouldn’t feel so out of place which can sometimes happen with bands that have a following but it’s also why you go to a live show in the first place. To get that full experience and be “in the know”. The set was a blend of solo and band tunes, both showcasing the sad and somber and the boot stomping and ass shaking with a dash of crowd work that was just as entertaining. I will be seeing this act again and can’t wait to do so. If you too want to experience the awesomeness you can check out Langhorne’s Tour Date Page for upcoming shows in your area.

This was also my first time at Space in Evanston, IL. This is a great little spot that is seeing a lot of up and comers coming through. If you want that always amazing “before they broke” atmosphere Space delivers. Check out there upcoming shows here.
