Binge Movie Aftertaste – Friday The 13th Retrospective w/ Matthew Goudreau and Mik Duffy: Freddy Vs Jason (2003) and Friday The 13th (2009)
Friday the 13th is, without a doubt, one of the most notorious movie series of all time. When it made its initial run in the 80s, the movies not only drew the ire of parent/teacher groups around the world. It also was the red headed stepchild in the eyes of Paramount executives. How did the series develop from its inception all the way to the modern day? That is the question myself, Matthew Goudreau, and Mik Duffy will explore in this podcast series.
It all comes down to this. In one podcast, me and the boys review the Vs movie of a generation, and the second remake of a horror classic released by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes studio. The first, 2003’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, was reviewed by the same three podcasters here.
The first movie reviewed here, 2003’s Freddy Vs Jason, was the culmination of close to twenty years of anticipation bringing Friday the 13th‘s Jason Voorhees and A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger together for a huge mano a mano brawl. In this portion of the podcast we talk about the many many scripts of this film which made circulation on the internets, Mik’s VERY interesting theory as to why Kane Hodder was not brought back to fight Robert Englund, and what David Goyer contributed to the film. As well as many, many other topics which we dissect to death.
Then it comes to the most antagonistic review we have done in quite some time. I was honestly not anticipating a disagreement when it comes to 2009’s Friday the 13th, a movie that many consider to be a failure of a remake. But here it is, as Matt and I disagree on the quality of what was released on that fateful February day in 2009. What is up with all this movie’s damn nudity? Is this Jason up to the task? Why is the guy from Gilmore Girls roaming around? The answers to these questions and many more in this final (for now?) podcast in what has added up to be another successful series. Stay tuned. 2020’s right around the corner, and we’re not stopping any time soon.
