It was looking like one thing and one thing only was going to keep the Fast & Furious franchise down, and that’s COVID-19. But, leave it up to Vin and his crew to escape the clutches of the evil virus by jumping off a high rise and landing on a car, walking away scott free. Ok, that doesn’t happen in Fast 9, but trust me when I say, it’s not far off.

By 2019, the Dwayne Johnson – Vin Diesel feud was on like Donkey Kong. So much so that when it came time to put his name in the credits as producer, Diesel was nowhere to be found. The story of who is on whose side in this thing could be an entire podcast in and of itself. But we are here to discuss Hobbs & Shaw the movie. A film that two hosts on this show watched for the very first time. Could the absence of the Dom-Father be the thing that finally makes all three of us like the same Fast & Furious movie? And is this REALLY a Fast & Furious movie?

How to follow up a billion dollar entry of an already multi successful film franchise? Why cast the high in action demand Charlize Theron and then hire F Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) of course! But high grosses didn’t add up to altered egos, as Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel engaged in a war of social media words, and the two actors seemed fit to just separate into their own corners of the Fast and Furious universe. But how would Daddy Vin adapt to no longer having the late Paul Walker to play off of? And why does Theron’s hair look like that of the twins from The Matrix sequels?

After Fast & Furious 6 was released and set box office records, everyone was once again set to come back. Everyone, that is, except the director of the last four movies in the series Justin Lin. Lin felt he had exhausted his supply for car chases and car races, so he was out the door. Enter James Wan. A director who was definitely respected amongst horror circles, but was now stepping into the biggest project of his life. But inflated egos, a HUGE cast, and tragic circumstances surrounding the death of series mainstay Paul Walker made Furious 7 one traumatic shoot. So after all these obstacles thrown Wan’s way, how’d the film come out?

Join myself, Alyx, and Matt as we dive right in like Dom and his crew dive out an airplane in this billion (with a b) dollar grossing film.

It must have felt weird to have felt like you blinked, and then it being 2013, 12 years after the first Fast & Furious film. But, times have changed our favorite familia. They’re agents now, and Hobbs tracks them down after their heist from the last film to once again fulfill their obligation to the country. Because when the country is on the line, small time street racers are who you call!

Well we have come upon it. The movie I was not looking forward to review. Because the one time I had seen it, I had a pretty visceral reaction to it. But I have enjoyed going through this series with Alyx and Matt, and honestly, I had remembered nary a thing about it. Will I react differently this time?

With 2009’s Fast and Furious rejuvenating the franchise, Daddy Dom Vin Diesel and company were set to put out another one. With director Justin Linn once again at the helm, everyone worked hard and fast to make sure the action was up to expectations. But this time, producers listened to their fans on Twitter -where every good filmmaking decision is made- and brought in some electricity to liven up the screen. In fact, it was the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, The Rock Dwayne Johnson. So did he add anything, and how do we feel about what is widely considered the best entry in the franchise?

By 2009, everyone involved with The Fast & Furious franchise needed a career boost. Director Justin Lin’s third sequel didn’t exactly set the box office afire, XXX didn’t go Vin Diesel’s way, Michelle Rodriguez found herself in legal trouble, Jordana Brewster’s phone wasn’t ringing after Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Paul Walker is, well, Paul Walker. So with everyone finding out they needed this franchise as much as the franchise needed them, enter 2009’s Fast & Furious. Can Lin’s vision make at least two of us like these characters at all?

In hindsight it’s hard to believe after so many films came afterwards, but in 2006 Universal was feeling that their treasured Fast and Furious franchise needed a reboot. Actors were becoming too big for their britches, and even a well renowned director such as John Singleton was failing to bring audiences in with his mostly successful but hard to watch 2 Fast 2 Furious. So the decision was made to recast, and bring in a new director to add some new blood to the proceedings. Enter Justin Lin, a filmmaker who up to this point was known as causing Roger Ebert to verbally defend his film A Better Tomorrow at the Sundance Film Festival. So without any box office stars (Bow Wow anyone?) would the franchise be able to survive?

After the unexpected success of the first Fast and Furious film, Universal realized that they had a franchise on their hands. In order to continue having a successful franchise, you need to keep bringing the same people back. So when the studio was given the shoot down from Vin Diesel about coming back, they were in a stand still. But Paul Walker had signed on, so Universal had commissioned two scripts, one with Diesel in mind and one without. He once again turned them down, so Universal brought in a once hot shot director by the name of John Singleton to breath new life into the Dom-less 1st sequel. Singleton came up with the solution of bringing his Baby Boy star Tyrese Gibson on board to see if they could bring the same chemistry that made the first film such a hit, and the film was off and running. Did they make a good film?
