Welcome back to Binge Media Sports. Remember when this picture was causing a little controversy? For those who don’t know who this is, say hello to Paulina Gretzky, the smoking hot daughter of Wayne Gretzky. Sure, she’s famous for being the Great One’s kid, but she also pissed off some female golfers when she was featured on the cover of Golf Digest using this picture. No, seriously, that actually was a sports story for a few days. Well, Paulina, the heat is certainly off of you. For those of you who don’t follow golf, allow me to introduce Paulina Gretzky’s fiancé, PGA Tour pro Dustin Johnson. I won’t give you every stat, but he’s 30 years old, kills the golf ball, has won 8 times on tour, has come close to winning majors, has made over 4 million dollars this year alone, has a smoking hot fiancée, and would be a lock for the Ryder Cup this fall. However, scandal has returned to the PGA Tour. Yesterday, Johnson said he would be taking a voluntary “leave of absence” from golf to focus on some personal issues, meaning he would miss next week’s PGA Championship and the aforementioned Ryder Cup. Allegedly, Johnson has a drug problem. I think Paulina is off the hook for taking a picture. Golf.com reported that Johnson had been suspended for six months due to failing a drug test, apparently his third failed test in five years, marijuana in 2009, cocaine in 2012, and cocaine once again this time. However, the PGA Tour has come out and said that he has not been suspended. Honestly, that’s all we know right now. The only reason I chose to write about this is that whether we like it or not, this is the kind of thing that doesn’t happen very often in golf. Sadly, I think we’ve gotten used to hearing stories of guys in other sports getting busted with weed or PED’s, maybe to the point that we just brush it off. Before I go any further, please don’t send any hate mail that the only reason this will be a bigger story is because Johnson is a rich white guy. If you’ve got a problem, call Stephen A. Smith. I think he’s still got a few days with nothing to do. Okay, don’t get pissed off about that either. Honestly, the reason I chose to write about it is that I really enjoy watching this guy play golf. He’s one of those guys that make a tournament more exciting when he’s near the top of the leaderboard. Sincerely, I hope this guy gets past his problems. Hey, it could be worse, right? Paulina could have taken that club she’s holding to his head.
JIM THOME
The big buzz around my hometown of Peoria this week is the unveiling of the Jim Thome statue in Cleveland on Saturday. I’ll admit that when I was younger that I wasn’t the biggest fan, and it was for all the wrong reasons. But when you meet the guy, which I have a few times, he’s as nice as you’d want any professional athlete to be, especially for a guy that played 22 seasons, had a lifetime BA of .276, 1699 RBI and 612 HR, good for seventh on the all-time list. He’s also a winner of the Roberto Clemente Award, given by MLB to a player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team”, which I’m sure Thome is more proud of than anything. It took me longer than most to appreciate this great player, but kudos to you Jim. Peoria is proud, even if you photobombed my shot at fame in the paper while I was trying to look at cheerleaders.
NFL HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2014
I know some of you are getting antsy, so here’s a little football for you. The Hall of Fame ceremony is this weekend, which means that the official start of the NFL preseason is just about here. So here you have it. Congratulations to the newest members of the HOF.
Missed zero games in 14 years of playing linebacker. Quite a feat along with 11 Pro Bowls and Defensive POY in 2002.
Finally, a punter in the HOF. He only had three kicks blocked in 1049 attempts. Before my time, but pretty cool.
Also before my time, but he’s credited with 122 sacks, 6 Pro Bowls and a 5-time 1st team All-Pro.
He was a Seahawk before the Seahawks were cool. 12 seasons, 9 Pro Bowls, 6-time All-Pro.
951 career receptions. 13,095 yards. Another 85 catches and 1229 yards in the postseason. Part of the best team to never win the Super Bowl.
141.5 career sacks, 22.5 in 2001 alone. Had sack in the last game of his career, a Super Bowl victory over the undefeated Patriots.
55 career interceptions. Nine were pick-sixes. 8 Pro Bowls. All-Decade Team 1990s.
PAUL GEORGE
Okay, so I had actually published this and then flipped over to Sportscenter and saw the Paul George situation happening. I completely forgot about the USA Basketball scrimmage tonight, so I had to at least comment on it. It’s so unfortunate for something to happen to a young player who is on the verge of becoming one of the best in the game. If you have not seen the clip yet, I do have it below, but I’ll go ahead and put this in all caps. WARNING: IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH, PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO. Not quite sure what else to say here. You hate to see a player go through that. Sadly, I instantly thought of the Shaun Livingston injury. All the best to Paul George. Damn. Again, THE VIDEO IS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC.
That’s it for Binge Media Sports this week. Check back Sunday for another edition of WORKING THE WEEKEND WITH LUKE. If you missed last week’s, you can check it out HERE. Comments on anything I’ve discussed here can be left below, or you can follow me and tweet @THElukenorris.
