This column will introduce you to the most popular movies that are coming out in theaters this weekend.
What movie will you see?
A Ghost Story
First off, this is not a horror movie. A Ghost Story is about a recently deceased husband who is lurking around his wife in a white sheet, but I don’t think she can see him. Starring in this drama romance flick are Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. David Lowery is the writer and director of A Ghost Story. Lowery has directed a ton of shorts, Pete’s Dragon (2016), and is set to direct a live action Peter Pan flick. How many Pan flicks do we need? Anyway, go check out A Ghost Story this weekend.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
This Spider-Man flick takes place several months after the events in Civil War. Tom Holland is back to reprise his Peter Parker/Spider-Man role from Civil War, while the rest of the cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, Donald Glover, and more. Jon Watts swings his way into the director’s chair as well as writing the screenplay. Watts has directed 2014’s Clown, and Cop Car. I know everyone will see this movie this weekend. So enjoy.
This week on my vacation, I’ve had plenty of time to sit down and enjoy some reading. My problem however, is that I decided to pick up a highly appreciated and well reviewed series in Bone. Bone is a series that borders more on the child/teen scale of entertainment, so there wasn’t much adult fun to be had in these books. This is not my problem with this series though, as I went through and found that I was not enjoying it as most seem to. Often times, Bone is listed as one of the greatest graphic novels of all-time, but I’ve always passed it up because it never looked particularly interesting. Now I know that there must have been a reason I kept passing it up, because it really just didn’t float with me. There are is a family of Bones from Boneville who are these little white creatures, presumably made of bone, that are finding their place in their world. As Fone Bone (they all had strange names) makes his way out of Boneville and into the great new world around him, he and his companions find several enemies. What the book does have is a little humor, though it’s not much because of the content limitations, it does help the book out a lot. It has a very silly undertone to it, which can really hurt the epic scale of the story but does provide a few laughs here and there. There was only one volume of this comic in the whole run that I enjoyed more than the rest and that was the fifth volume titled Rock Jaw, Master of the Eastern Border. Now, the reason I thought this volume was so fun is because Bone and his friends are trying to work with and escape Roque Ja, the Master of the Eastern Border. But, him and his slightly off Bone brother cannot help but saying his name was Rock Jaw and kept calling him Rock Jaw. It was hysterical, albeit for just a moment, but it was not enough to save this entire series. I also did enjoy reading the volumes I had in color more than I did the ones that were black and white. I would say to go for the colored versions if you decide to read it for yourself, as it gave a whole lot more to the story. I would recommend it to those who don’t mind reading children’s stories and like high fantasy/adventure stories. It’s amazing to me that with how well this series is reviewed, that it hasn’t been made into a movie yet. I am sure technical boundaries have something to do with it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw it in the future. With the laughs aplenty, silliness abound, and surely addicting adventure for the little ones, Bone will be a hit with younger audiences when read and inevitably viewed.
Next up I got to read the graphic novel adaptations of a long-running character in the world of fiction by Patricia Briggs. I’ve read the first book in the Mercy Thompson series, and while it was tolerable I didn’t quite get into it as much as some other urban fantasy I’ve read. Patricia Briggs fortunately keeps a lot of the “romance” and sexual overtone to a minimum, as to not turn her fiction into trashy werewolf romance novels. I decided when I read the first book that I could wait to read the rest of the series, but I did really enjoy Mercy Thompson as a character because she was tough like some of my other favorite urban fantasy heroes. The first book I read was called Homecoming, and it was more or less a prequel story detailing how Mercy became a VW mechanic at a shop with an angry old man. The angry old man’s son was the center of the prequel story, who Mercy rescues from a pack of bad werewolves. Then in Moon Called, which is split into two graphic novels, we have an adaptation of the story from the first book. A new kid comes strolling into town who is on the run from werewolves, but he was recently turned and struggles with control. Mercy puts herself in a bad situation looking after a hungry, fresh werewolf but feels that it’s the right thing to do. As Mercy tries to find help for her new werewolf friend, the struggles of being a shapeshifter in a world of werewolves and vampires are highlighted. Mercy Thompson is cool, sexy, and bad ass, which is what makes Briggs’ character work so well on the comic book page. I am looking forward to reading more if there are any, and at least picking this book series back up in the future.
