That’s all there is folks, we’re not gonna bullshit you here. Batch was off jerkin’ it in San Diego so Jack Valley and Kupka said “Oh well”, and dove head first into Tom Clancy’s The Division. They streamed it, talked about the little they did since the last show, and even discussed some casting for a movie version of Bioshock Infinite per a listeners request. Batch did decide to send us a little message on his early thoughts of The Division which you can catch at the end of the show. Go listen or watch now!
Hello again Binge friends! Another week at the Comic Binge, and yet again it’s another week full of school and work. However, I did get a chance to check out a book that has been on the list for quite a long time. Gears of War is easily one of my favorite video game franchises, and just franchises in general. On my back, the logos of both the Gears and the Locust are present in permanent ink, and I like to think of myself as a bad ass comparative to that of Marcus Fenix. Now, whether or not that is actually true, will one day be for you to decide. But with this fandom, I’ve been dying to check out the Gears of War graphic novels and my oh my was I in for a treat. The first volume by Joshua Ortega, who wrote the game for Gears of War 2, was outstanding. It picks up where the first game leaves off and mostly follows the thoughts of Jace, a rookie in training. The book goes about as normal, as the Gears search through the rubble after the Lightmass bombing for survivors and more Locusts to kill. The art in this book is so fitting with the gritty style of Gears of War storytelling. It absolutely doesn’t hurt this series at all that Gears of War is such a phenomenal story to work off of, as it was probably one of the most compelling in the last era of video gaming. The art was gory and bloody, and yes we get to see some motherfuckers get chainsawed to hell. Best of all, is Jace’s characterization of Marcus Fenix. It’s easy to lose sight of exactly who Marcus Fenix is when playing the game, because he’s the slow-speaking and steady-standing Gear of the ages, who you actually get to play as. Being that you’re this character, his characterization sometimes falls by the wayside. Leave it to Jace in this book to explain just exactly how much of a bad ass motherfucker Fenix is, and how intimidating and tough he can be. Overall this book was great, the art was on point and the story was as quality as what is present in the games. The only thing I’m missing is more, and apparently I have another volume to check out before I have to start writing people for more graphic novels. The book series is also a good read if you’re a fan of the series, but nothing quite as fun to read as this graphic novel original story. I’ll leave you with this, the book was so good that I might just be venturing out tonight to pick up that new Gears of War Xbox One bundle… Yeah, I miss my crew. Gear out.
As an aside this week, I wanted to mention that I just got done with Patton Oswalt’s Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film. I know it’s not comics, but I’ve really enjoyed sharing other reads with you on here so I figured this was as good a thing to share as any. Patton Oswalt has written several books to which he can claim fame, his most popular probably being Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. I actually listened to Silver Screen Fiend on audio, which was narrated by the author, Mr. Oswalt! There’s nothing better than listening to a memoir read by the author, as they give it the flair and tone that it so deserves. A perfect example of this would be Kevin Smith’s latest work in Tough S#!t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good, but I digress. Patton so eloquently, yet humorously chronicles his adventures in several movie theaters across the country, and how they relate to his career and life. It was really interesting to hear how film can be loved and appreciated in a totally different way than maybe you or I have come to know it. By using two books that had listings of the best films of all-time, Oswalt had made it a mission to finish seeing all of this films on a big screen at some point in his life. By the end of the book, you can see how his adventures on the silver screen had brought him to where he was today, and kept him from going where he thought he ought to have been. I’m not the biggest Patton Oswalt fan, though I do appreciate his starring role in Big Fan, and also side stuff like Justified. His stand up has never really been funny to me, as it is more of a rant session or diatribe about the things he is passionate about. But this is what made Silver Screen Fiend so great, and such a great read. Patton, much like Kevin Smith, knows how to speak, and knows how to speak outside of audience. Sure, he has a unique identity, voice and look, but he manages to captivate you with his tales of seeing old classics on the screen, and also recounting the day that he almost managed to get Jerry Lee Lewis’ The Day the Clown Cried made. The telling of that story, was among some of the best I’ve heard in a celebrity memoir. If you like films, Patton, or just good celebrity memoirs, this is definitely a good one to pick up. Makes me want to go back and watch some Criterion film on my mega TV, but let’s face it I just don’t have the time. Until next week folks!
