Leap!
Not much going on this weekend. So, here we go. Originally titled Ballerina, Leap! tells the story of an orphan who dreams of one day becoming a ballerina. Lending their voice for this animated feature are Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, Carly “Call Me Maybe” Rae Jepsen, Kate McKinnon, Mel Brooks, and more. Eric Summer and Éric Warin are the directors of Leap!. Warin worked in the animation department for The Triplets of Belleville, which was nominated in 2004 for best animated feature. Now leap into theaters to check out Leap!!!

Baby Driver
That’s right baby!!! Baby Driver is about Baby, a young getaway driver, who unwillingly takes part in a heist for a crime boss. Baby needs the music on his iPod to help him focus and concentrate on his driving. Music will play a huge part in this movie. Starring in this action crime flick are Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eliza González, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and more. This is Edgar Wright’s 5th directorial film. His other films include The Cornetto trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Don’t be a baby, go see this flick in theaters this weekend.
The Beguiled
During the Civil War, a wounded soldier finds his way to an all girl’s school in Virginia. While he’s there, sexual tension and rivalries take over the house. Starring in this period piece remake from 1971 are Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and more. I feel like Elle is getting way more work than Dakota. Anyway, Sofia Coppola co-writes and directs this film. Coppola’s last four films are A Very Murray Christmas, The Bling Ring, Somewhere, and Marie Antionette. Do you love period pieces? Then check this one out.
The Big Sick
The Big Sick tells the story of a young couple and the way they deal with their cultural differences. Starring in this romantic comedy are Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, and more. Michael Showalter of Wet Hot American Summer fame directs this flick, while Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon are the writers. Showalter has directed Hello, My Name is Doris (2015), starring Sally Field. Are you sick of summer blockbusters? Then check out The Big Sick.
Despicable Me 3
I am Gru. Gru is back in the third installment of the Despicable franchise. This time Gru meets his long-lost brother Dru, who is more cheerful and successful in life. However, Dru wants to join Gru for one last heist. What will Gru do? Lending their voices for part 3 are Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Julie Andrews, and more. There are 3 directors on this animated feature: Eric Guillon, Kyle Balda, and Pierre Coffin. Balda directed Minions, while Coffin directed Despicable Me 1,2, and Minions. Don’t be despicable, go to the theater.
The House
The House tells the story of a couple who start an illegal casino in their house after they spent their daughters college funds. Starring in this comedy are Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll, Rob Huebel, and more. Andrew Jay Cohen is the co-writer and director of this flick. This is Cohen’s first directorial/theatrical release, however, Cohen has written screenplays for Neighbors, 1 and 2, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Now get out of the house this weekend and check out The House.

3 Generations (limited release)
3 Generations tells the story of Ray, a young female who is transitioning to become a male and how her family will respond to her change. Starring in this drama are Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon, Naomi Watts, Linda Emond (Julia & Julia), and more. Gaby Dellal is the writer and director of the flick. Dellal has directed On a Clear Day and Angels Crest. Now, find some transportation to see this transgender flick. That joke was kinda tacky. Oh well.
The Dinner
Paul, reluctant to go to dinner with his brother and their wives, are not there for just dinner. Dun Dun Dun. Pauls brother has an ulterior motive as to why they got together. This dramatic thriller stars Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, Rebecca Hall, Chloe Sevigny, and more. Writing and directing this flick is Oren Moverman. Moverman wrote and directed The Messenger and Rampart. He also wrote the screenplay for I’m Not There. Go out to dinner and then check out The Dinner.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Do I really need to go over the synopsis of this movie? Exactly. So, I won’t. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn (brother of James). Now, lets welcome the newcomers…Pom Klementieff (Old Boy – 2013), Sylvester Stallone, Kurt “Nate hates me” Russell, Tommy Flanagan (SOA), and more. James Gunn returns as writer and director because he’s no dummy. Gunn has also signed on for GOTG Vol. 3 because again, he’s no dummy. No pun here. Just go see this flick this weekend.

Based on a true story, Academy Award Winner, Matthew McConaughey stars as Newton Knight, a farmer during the Civil War who forms a group of rebels to fight against the Confederate Army. Keri Russel also stars as Serena Knight, Newts wife. Directing is Gary Ross. Ross has directed Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, and The Hunger Games. So, if you are Jonesing for a historical, true story, action, drama picture, then go check this out.
Independence Day: Resurgence

Welcome back to Earf? And welcome back, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner. The cast however, says goodbye to Will Smith, while bringing on some newcomers, Maika Monroe(It Follows), Joey King(The Conjuring), Liam Hemsworth(Not Thor), and of course, Anthony J Sacco of BMFML fame. Rolland Emmerich returns to direct his summer blockbuster, alien invasion sequel. Hopefully, Emmerich can make his own resurgence, (e.g., 10,000 BC, 2012, and White House Down). “We will not go quietly into the night, again! We will not vanish without a fight, again! We’re going to live on, again! We’re going to survive, again! This weekend, we celebrate our Independence Day: Resurgence.”
The Neon Demon

Are you a fan of Nicolas Winding Refns’ films, Bronson, Drive, and Only God Forgives? Well, he’s back with The Neon Demon, a dramatic/psychological thriller starring Elle Fanning. Fanning plays Jesse, a model trying to make it big in Los Angeles. Jesse moves into an apartment with other models, well, these aren’t just any models. These are blood sucking women, who will do anything to secure their longevity, beauty, and relevance. The Neon Demon also stars, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jena Malone. So, if you’re not walking on any runways this weekend, then be a model citizen and run away to the theater to catch this thriller.
The Shallows

Its almost Shark Week! Blake Lively stars as Nancy, a surfer who is attacked by a great white shark. Stranded on some rocks and 200 yards from shore, Nancy has to survive with all her might to get back to the beach. There are only 3 other cast members listed: Óscar Jaenada(The Losers), Brett Cullen(LOST), and Sedona Legge. The director is Jaume Collet-Serra, who has directed 2005’s House of Wax, Orphan, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. Don’t be shallow, go see a shark movie.
