Binge Movie Aftertaste – Christopher Nolan Retrospective w/ Jack Falvey IV and Matthew Goudreau: Interstellar (2014)
After doing full career retrospectives on Michael Mann and Quentin Tarantino last year, it didn’t take long to figure out whose directorial career the Aftertaste was going to tackle next. An influencer, and someone whose films can be dissected to death, Christopher Nolan is someone who has a firm grasp on what kind of vision he wants to display. From Batman to focused World War II stories, Nolan has certainly run the gamut of what kind of stories he has to tell. But with the only Nolan related things covered in this podcast being his Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as him having a film called Tenet scheduled to come out this summer, we felt it was time to tackle the rest of his career. So join myself, Jack, and Matt as we look at what his career outside of the cowl has consisted of, while leading up to a review of Tenet.
After The Dark Knight Rises, the commitments Nolan had to the studio completely changed. As Goudreau pointed out at the conclusion of that podcast, he now had a blank checkbook to do what he wanted. But with his superhero trilogy done, what was the British filmmaker going to do to try and once again top himself?
Enter Interstellar. Once a project which was set up for Steven Spielberg, it was now Christopher Nolan’s job to take his brother Jonathan Nolan’s script and try to make it fit more to his own sensibilities than those of the sentimental populist Spielberg. But with Matthew McConaughey in the middle of a career renaissance, and his Catwoman Anne Hathaway attached to star, it would seem that Nolan would finally reach those Oscar waving heights needed to be taken seriously for anything other than ‘that guy who makes popular Batman movies’. Did Interstellar accomplish that feat?
Join myself, Matt, and Jack as we explore that question, and wonder if Nolan did indeed make as good a space epic his as his hero Stanley Kubrick had done 46 years earlier.
