Welcome back to Binge Sports and welcome to Week 7 of the Binge Sports Pick ‘Em Contest. It was another rough week, and a few people didn’t have the balls to get in and take a chance this week. For those who did, only four people ended up on the positive side of things this week, but Ed maintained his top spot in the standings this week anyway. There was some shuffling this week, including my four-spot drop, but I’m looking to bounce back this week. Let’s take a look at how Week 6 played out and take a look at the Week 7 games.

Welcome back to Binge Sports and welcome back to Week 7 of the inaugural season of the Binge Fantasy Football League. While I want to spend the article talking about how I’m still on top of the standings after an easy win over Chad D. and his Deflated Balls, who’s now 1-5 after talking all kinds of shit right after the draft, that wasn’t the biggest story of the week. In case you missed it this past week, our own Jack Falvey aka “the guy with too many nicknames” engaged in an epic message war with Art ahead of their 6th place vs last place matchup. Trust me, the smacktalk was better than the actual game, as 12.5 or Die won by just over 20 over Vatos Locos, dropping poor Art to 0-6. If there’s any team in the league that’s worse, it’s gotta be Oh Hai Denny Luis, who got thumped by Murphys Law this week, moving Murph into third in the standings. He’s actually got the most points in the league right now, while Denny is bringing up the rear in that category. In a stroke of luck, we get a Vatos Locos v. Oh Hai Denny Luis battle this week. Somebody start the message war.
In other news, the biggest defeat of the week came at Garrett’s expense, as he took a 64.30-point pounding from Daniel’s Bigfoot in Sandals, which hopefully provided him some cheer after he put a curse on his Dodgers last week. Garrett ruined the chance of the Binge Media crew having a perfect week as Nick’s Jaws of Geno put up a close win against Chad F.’s Chi-Town Smackdowns, so thanks for that, G Force. Your schedule doesn’t get any easier this week against Murphys Law. Rounding out the week was an important game between two 4-1 teams, with Touchdown There Tim getting a win against Wayne and his not so awesome this week team. Wayne drops to seventh in the standings in the loss, and the win sets up a HUGE 1 vs 2 game this week between me and Tim. Let’s take a look at the full results and look ahead to the Week 7 games. Suck it, Tim!

Ever see a movie and think “This movie was just like that other one because of X, Y and Z”? I feel that way too, and for better or worse almost every movie is a product of what has come before it. I believe that most movies can be explained by comparing them to other films, so I break down the top three films that I believe contain the crucial elements that make up the film in question. This week’s entry is The Martian.
The Martian was a pretty big critical success, raking in a worldwide total of $319,197,016 so far. The film still has legs and audiences have responded positively to the sci-fi drama. When releasing a film, timing has a lot to do with how it is received, both in terms of the time of year and even the era in which it was released. The Martian has definitely benefited from a gap in quality theatrical releases, and as such is getting a ton of fans saying it’s an original and new type of film. While the film is really solid and possibly one of the year’s best, it definitely wears it’s influences on its sleeve. So how do you make The Martian? The recipe calls for three parts:
Cast Away was a big movie back in 2000 and it still stands as one of the acting pinnacles of Tom Hanks’ career. With director Robert Zemeckis, the story of Chuck Noland’s fight to survive was filled with raw emotion, talent and centered around the main character’s intelligence and will to survive. Sound familiar? The Martian borrowed heavily from Cast Away in terms of writing and acting. Replace the volleyball Wilson with Watney’s video diaries and you start to see the similarities even further. The fact that Scott’s film borrows from Zemeckis’ only cements both stories as solid pieces of entertainment.
Noticing a theme here? By no fault of his own, the indirect influence of Tom Hanks is all over The Martian. Apollo 13, the based-on-a-true story account of the ill-fated NASA mission to the moon is, much like Cast Away, another brilliant piece of acting from Hanks. This time with Ron Howard at the helm, the film does a really great job of conveying the triumph of scientific achievement in the face of overwhelming adversity. Through their communication with NASA and the resourcefulness of the astronauts, the men made it home safe. Despite the fact that Apollo 13 is a true story and that this event actually happened, the sequence of events is eerily similar to Watney’s experience. It’s easy to see that, again, whether it was Mark Waid’s source novel or Drew Goddard’s script, they went with the “if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it” approach and reworked this plot for new audiences.
The more perceptive of you could probably see this one coming, but make no mistake; Saving Private Ryan has a critical element of the mix. To quote the goddamn poster, “This time, the mission is a man.” There is no The Martian without a stranded Mark Watney, and as such Matt Damon proves he will always need saving. There’s something about Damon that makes him seem like a survivor, and for whatever reason we buy him in that role. Between this movie, The Martian and Interstellar, Damon is Hollywood’s go-to “man-sel in distress” these days.
So there you have it. The awkward love-child of Cast Away, Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan gives you The Martian. We’re not saying that Matt Damon is taking over for Tom Hanks but it kinda seems like Matt Damon is taking over for Tom Hanks. I can’t decide if that’s douche chilly or cool as hell. At this pace I wouldn’t be surprised if Damon’s next is a Bachelor Party/Toy Story/Turner and Hooch animated erotic murder mystery. Fingers crossed.

Nothing but box office points for the last two weeks of HFL updates. When the hell did Ammon get 130 points? That’s like 125 more than he had last year. Everybody with STAR WARS ladies are waiting patiently. The points will come, oh yes, they will come. Click the link below for the whole shebang.
Welcome to our 400th podcast! It’s hard to believe we remember how to do this each and every week let alone 400 times. Let’s celebrate with Law, MovieFreak, and BingeCast rookie, Batch.
TV Round-Up goes deep inside The Walking Dead, Project Greenlight, Homeland, You’re the Worst, Fargo, Daredevil, Gotham, Flash, and more. Moreno and Kupka call in from The Other Other Wedding, completely shitfaced and supka’d.
Somewhere in there we get on the topic of how the film version of Marvel’s CIVIL WAR is going to pull off what the book did with only a handful of characters.
We all get yelled at during Google Voice which is a good thing, we need that kind of punishment once in a while.
What Did You Watch rocks out with TALES OF HALLOWEEN, GOODNIGHT MOMMY, BEASTS OF NO NATION. THE GIFT, MISSISSIPPI GRIND, and more.
Finally, we take a look at Movie Homework. The original LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a weird movie that makes you feel happy-go-lucky while watching a woman get raped by a tree.
Stay tuned this week because our commentaries are back with the new season of Fargo!
That’s what it’s all about right there. Welcome back to Binge Sports and our continuing coverage of the 2015 Major League Baseball Playoffs. After what can only be described as a wild divisional series round, we’re now down to the final four teams that still have a chance to be called World Series Champions. Let’s take a quick look at my predictions and the fan poll results from the ALDS and NLDS, and preview the upcoming ALCS and NLCS matchups.
ALDS Results
Texas Rangers vs Toronto Blue Jays: Blue Jays win in 5
My prediction: Blue Jays in 4
Fan poll: 100% picked Toronto
How crazy was that series? Texas takes the first two, but the Blue Jays fought back and fought back hard, especially in that wild Game 5. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a game like that.
Houston Astros vs Kansas City Royals: Royals win in 5
My prediction: Royals in 5
Fan poll: 50% picked Kansas City
Who’d have thought that the only team to be back in the LCS in either league from last year would be the Kansas City Royals, but they earned that spot this year. I must give credit to the Houston Astros for a great season, and that young team will be a force to be reckoned with for a while.
NLDS Results
Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals: Cubs win in 4
My prediction: Cubs in 5
Fan poll: 50% picked Chicago
The dream continues for the 2015 Chicago Cubs. After losing Game 1, the Cubs put on a power display over the next three games that the baseball world has never seen, including a record six home runs in Game 3 alone. This team is fun to watch and clinched a postseason series for the first time in history at home, and they did it by beating their long-time rival.
New York Mets vs Los Angeles Dodgers: Mets win in 5
My prediction: Dodgers in 4
Fan poll: 33% picked New York
Well, nobody’s perfect, but I was really close on those first three series, but it looks like most of us were wrong on the Dodgers/Mets series. I think I may have underestimated the real power of the Mets offense, and the grit of that young pitching staff. I honestly thought that with putting Kershaw and Greinke out there twice that the Dodgers had the clear advantage, but the Mets fought through and finished off LA late last night to earn a trip to the NLCS.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Kansas City Royals
Game 1: @Kansas City-Friday, October 16
Game 2: @Kansas City-Saturday, October 17
Game 3: @Toronto-Monday, October 19
Game 4: @Toronto-Tuesday, October 20
*Game 5: @Toronto-Wednesday, October 21
*Game 6: @Kansas City-Friday, October 23
*Game 7: @Kansas City-Saturday, October 24
*-if necessary
These were the two best teams in the American League this year. The Royals pretty much had their division wrapped up in May, while the Blue Jays stayed in a battle with the New York Yankees up until the last few weeks of the regular season, doing most of their damage after going all in for the 2015 season with some key acquisitions at the trade deadline.
In seven games this season, the Blue Jays won four of them. The Royals took two out of three in Kansas City, but Toronto won three out of four at the Rogers Centre. A difference of one game in the regular season gives the Royals home-field advantage in this ALCS, which could be a big factor. Seriously, how loud was that Toronto crowd on Wednesday? The Blue Jays have a lot of pop on offense with Jose Bautista and MVP candidate Josh Donaldson, while the Royals will counter with Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer. However, there’s some good pitching on both staffs as well.
My prediction: Blue Jays in 6
[yop_poll id=”321″ tr_id=””” show_results=”-1″]
Chicago Cubs vs New York Mets
Game 1: @New York-Saturday, October 17
Game 2: @New York-Sunday, October 18
Game 3: @Chicago-Tuesday, October 20
Game 4: @Chicago-Wednesday, October 21
*Game 5: @Chicago-Thursday, October 22
*Game 6: @New York-Saturday, October 24
*Game 7: @New York-Sunday, October 25
*-if necessary
Somebody explain this to me. The Cubs had a better record than the Mets, by seven games to be exact. The Cubs won all seven games they played against the Mets this season. Yet, the Mets have the home-field advantage in this NLCS. Okay, I don’t make the rules (yet), but a change needs to be made in the playoff system in general. It was a shame that two of the three best teams in baseball had to play in the wild card game. Tough break Pittsburgh. Then the winner of that game had to play the team with the best record in baseball, they being the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs were able to get through both of those teams, and now have a date in New York on Saturday night. I suppose there’s something to be said for winning your division, but I don’t think I’m the only one that feels this way. Nonetheless, here we are.
As I mentioned, the Cubs won all seven games against New York this year, but Yoenis Cespedes hadn’t arrived yet, and he’s been a big difference maker for these Mets. This is going to be one fun series. The Cubs have a lot of youth, and are playing at an extremely high level on offense, but the Mets counter with one of the best young pitching staffs in all of baseball. This is going to be one fun series. Did I already say that? Well, then it must be true.
My prediction: Cubs in 6

After reading Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’ a few months ago I was as excited for the film as the next nerd. The problem was, much like the tail end of a binge-watch on Netflix, I needed more. I needed it now. Luckily for me, there were two books coming out weeks apart that fit the genre. I’d expect the sci-fi space adventure to be even more prevalent than it is nowadays because of the success of GRAVITY a few years ago. I expect it even more now that THE MARTIAN film adaptation has kicked all sorts of ass since it premiered. The fact is, these two novels came out at the perfect time (one more than the other – more on that later) and is proven even more by the fact that ‘The Fall’ has already started development for a television show. What are they all about? Relax, we’re getting there.
THE FALL by R.J. Pineiro
From the Author’s Website: “A man jumps from the upper-most reaches of the atmosphere and vanishes, ending up on an alternate Earth where he died five years earlier.”
There’s a lot more action here than in ‘The Martian’ or ‘Saturn Run’ and that’s a good thing. Jack Taylor is a badass, adrenaline seeking, government contractor that decides he wants to test a new suit for the military that would allow soldiers to drop into specific locations from orbit, undetected. So he does. He lands in an alternate universe very much like the one we live in except for the fact that he’s been dead for five years, good guys are sometimes bad guys, and his best friend is banging his wife. Jack is more Bruce Willis than Sandra Bullock so when the shit hits the fan, it’s time to strap up and start whooping assholes in order to get back to his reality. I love the mix of science fiction and action in this story. Jack’s black ops background allows him the skills to fight, spy, sneak, kill, and use his head in order to get the job done. That said, if this is being picked up by a network television station, it will suck when translated to the small screen. Too much will change. We’ve been here before. And before that. And before that.
Rating: 8/10
SATURN RUN by John Sanford and Ctein
After the discovery of a starship docking at Saturn, America and China race to make first contact with an alien species.
I love this book. It’s heavy on the science and finds the perfect mix of humor and likable characters to allow you to stop feeling stupid long enough to appreciate the story. What we have here is a solid political drama, a space epic, a sci-fi adventure, and an engaging ensemble all rolled into one fantastic read. America is trying to pull a fast one on China. China is pissed and tries to shove the alien technology up the American buttholes. Nobody knows what to expect to find when (if) they ever get there but both nations are risking everything to get there first. I listened to a 17 hour audiobook version of this story and it felt like I blasted through it in one work shift. I didn’t of course, but there’s no way to describe how fast it made those 500 minivans fly by every night. I was obsessed. The timing isn’t too bad either with the recent speculation of a strange space anomaly that some have considered the possibility of being an alien structure. Who knows whatever the hell that is but the publishers of ‘Saturn Run’ should be all over that shit like face-huggers on word-holes. This is the book of the year for me as it doesn’t disappoint in any aspect. The science is as legit as possible, as told by the author himself in an afterword (not that I would know otherwise), the ending delivers on all the right notes, and it’s as fun and intense as you’d hope.
Welcome back to Binge Sports and welcome to Week 6 of the Binge Sports Pick ‘Em Contest. Well, it was another crazy week in the NFL. There were a few games that went the wrong way for some people, including the 14-point game, which saw only one person pick Pittsburgh over San Diego. In fact, there were quite a few misses this week on the bigger games, which once again kept the point totals a little down this week. The winner of the week was TM, which moved him up to fifth in the overall standings. We also have a new leader. After yet another week of inching away at it, Ed Minkowski is finally looking down at the rest of us. As for me, I flip-flopped with Denny Luis, putting myself in the third position as Denny moved down to fourth. Let’s take a look at how the week played out and look ahead to the Week 6 games.

Welcome back to Binge Sports and welcome to Week 6 of the Binge Fantasy Football League, where we’re now down to one….one winless team that is. Sorry Art, but your Vatos Locos were just no match for my Italian Stallions, who had another surprising week to stay atop the BFFL standings. But speaking of winless teams, our own Garrett Collins took himself out of that category with a big win over Oh Hai Denny Luis…not much to hype there brother. Staying with the Binge crew, Episode IV took a loss this week at the hands of Murphys Law, who continues to put up big points each and every week. Comic guy Nick Spears also lost this week to Touchdown There, dropping him to 3-2. Other matchups this week saw the Chi-Town Smackdowns put a beating on Bigfoot in Sandals, and Chad D.’s balls were deflated once again as he was thumped by Wayne’s Awesome Team. Let’s check the full results for Week 5 and look ahead to the matchups we’ve got in store for Week 6.
