Week 2 is in the books. We break it down, try to figure out what the f?@k is going on with some of the NFL teams, and discuss which teams are emerging as this years best bets to make the playoffs. Also, Jameis Winston and LeShawn McCoy are in the news again, and not for their skills on the gridiron. Then we make our Week 3 picks.

As always happens, I’ve been floored by a new BingeCast recommendation. Black Mirror is one of the most fresh new shows I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t really consider the bad side of technology much at all. Hell, I’m studying to work in the industry and I constantly advocate for more and better ways to utilize current technologies. Black Mirror has me second guessing that line of thought. I’ve gotta say, after having gotten through the first series, episode 1 was probably the most affecting of the bunch thus far. I love the moral confusion put on display by the Prime Minister, his staff and the country at large in response to what happens. Episode 2, dealing with some sort of dystopian prison/work house was also really fantastic storytelling, even if I felt like the end was a little convenient. Episode 3 was fantastic, showing a concept that on its own could be its own series. All in all, a great series that I’m thoroughly enjoying, high marks so far.
Yes, that’s right, once again we run the AFC East. It’s always great to go to a game, but it’s much sweeter when, given a shitty first half, our boys come out and beat the fuck out of our opponent. It’s that much better when it’s a divisional rival, especially one that rather consistently has our number in their own house. Condolences for crushing Dolphins fans playoff hopes for the year, but it’s Gillette fucking Stadium. If we lose there, it’s a fluke. Doesn’t matter how it gets done, if Brady throws 4 TDs or the ground game gets unleashed. I will say, though, Brandon Browner is pissing me right the fuck off. The guy draws a flag from farting in the direction of a ref and I think at this point they’re just sending him a message. I’m ont arguing that he didn’t commit those penalties, but he has to be smarter going forward. Also, Gronk catch ball, Gronk score, pants dropped. All in a great Sunday, wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Almost through the December insanity, I’m a little over a week away from being done with it for the year. This time of year is taxing for everyone, but combine final exams with the entire weight of a small business in its busiest week of the year and you get the idea. Keep an eye out soon for my Year in Review article, and as always, Binge On!
The bye weeks are over and it’s crunch time in the NFL. Welcome to Binge Sports NFL coverage. Over the next couple of days, I’m going to break down every team in the NFL as we enter Week 13 of the regular season and in the weeks to come, I’ll bring you updates as we inch closer to the playoffs.
With five games to go, and so many teams still in the playoff picture, I’ll break down where your team is, who they’ve got left to play, and make my own predictions on how this plays out. And I’m very excited to announce the return of the fan vote. After each division, make your pick on who you think will win each division. I’ve only included teams that have an actual chance. Sorry Raider Nation. We’ll start today with the AFC.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
CURRENT STANDING: 9-2, 1st in AFC East
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @GB, @SD, MIA, @NYJ, BUF
BREAKDOWN: Well, here we are again. Much to Jack’s delight, the Pats are atop the AFC East, the AFC overall, and may be the best team in the NFL to this point. After a disappointing start, New England is hitting on all cylinders and are basically a lock to win this division and are on the fast track to home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. This week’s matchup against the Packers may be a Super Bowl preview.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
CURRENT STANDING: 6-5, T-2nd in AFC East
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @NYJ, BAL, @NE, MIN, NYJ
BREAKDOWN: The Dolphins will be in a battle for a wildcard slot, but outside of the Patriots game in two weeks, their schedule looks pretty good, especially with two matchups with the lowly Jets.
BUFFALO BILLS
CURRENT STANDING: 6-5, T-2nd in AFC East
REMAINING SCHEDULE: CLE, @DEN, GB, @OAK, @NE
BREAKDOWN: The Bills are one of the best stories in football this year. However, a tough schedule looms ahead. This week’s matchup against the another feelgood team, the Browns, will be a tough test, and it doesn’t get any easier with games left against the Broncos, Packers, and Patriots. But at least they still get to play the Raiders.
NEW YORK JETS
CURRENT STANDING: 2-9, last in AFC East
REMAINING SCHEDULE: MIA, @MIN, @TEN, NE, @MIA
BREAKDOWN: J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S, Jets are awful! Okay, maybe that’s now how it goes but it’s true. The Jets certainly aren’t fighting for a playoff spot, but are in a heated battle with the Jags, Raiders, and Bucs for that number one pick.

CINCINNATI BENGALS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-3-1, 1st in AFC North
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @TB, PIT, @CLE, DEN, @PIT
BREAKDOWN: For the moment, the Bengals sit atop the most competitive division in football this season, and it’s actually due to a tie they had with Carolina. This is anybody’s division right now and every game is crucial. This week’s game against the Bucs should be a breeze, but they finish with three division games and a Week 16 matchup with the Broncos who will probably still be fighting for home field advantage.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, T-2nd in AFC North
REMAINING SCHEDULE: NO, @CIN, @ATL, KC, CIN
BREAKDOWN: I think the Steelers have one more easy game than the Bengals do right now. With two games left against the dreadful NFC South, the Steelers may have a slight advantage, but it will obviously be the two games against the Bengals that will make or break the season.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, T-2nd in AFC North
REMAINING SCHEDULE: SD, @MIA, JAC, @HOU, CLE
BREAKDOWN: The Ravens only have one game left in the division and play three of their last five at home, including a game against 1-10 Jacksonville and finish the season against the Browns, which could be a game to see who moves on and who goes home.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, T-2nd in AFC North
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @BUF, IND, CIN, @CAR, @BAL
BREAKDOWN: The Browns may be the biggest surprise in the AFC this year. They just find a way to keep on winning games. They’ve got a tough three weeks ahead with a game this weekend in Buffalo, but get to stay at home for matchups with the Colts and the division-leading Bengals. They’re punished for that with two games on the road to finish up, but at least one is against a 3-win Panthers team. Somebody is going to be left out in the cold from this division. Will Cleveland get burned once again?

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, 1st in AFC South
REMAINING SCHEDULE: WAS, @CLE, HOU, @DAL, @TEN
BREAKDOWN: With a two game lead with five to go, I’d say the Colts are a safe bet to win this division. I don’t see them having too many problems this weekend at home against Washington, but three of the last five are on the road. Stranger things have happened, I suppose.
HOUSTON TEXANS
CURRENT STANDING: 5-6, 2nd in AFC South
REMAINING SCHEDULE: TEN, @JAC, @IND, BAL, JAC
BREAKDOWN: It’s hard to make up two games in five weeks, especially chasing a team like Indy, but with two games left against Jacksonville and a huge game against the Colts in three weeks, don’t count out potential MVP J.J.Watt and the Texans just yet.
TENNESSEE TITANS
CURRENT STANDING: 2-9, 3rd in AFC South
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @HOU, NYG, NYJ, @JAC, IND
BREAKDOWN: Tennessee just has nothing going right now. I guess I forgot to mention them in the fight for the number one pick earlier. Sorry.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
CURRENT STANDING: 1-10, last in AFC South
REMAINING SCHEDULE: NYG, HOU, @BAL, TEN, @HOU
BREAKDOWN: This record actually surprises me a little bit. I certainly didn’t think they would be a playoff team just yet, but at least Denard Robinson is entertaining.
[yop_poll id=”150″]
DENVER BRONCOS
CURRENT STANDING: 8-3, 1st in AFC West
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @KC, BUF, @SD, @CIN, OAK
BREAKDOWN: For a while there, the Broncos looked like they were the best team in the NFL. It’s not that they’re not a good team, but they’re in a dogfight in this division. This week’s game at Arrowhead, along with a game in San Diego in three weeks, will give us a good idea about where this division may be headed.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, T-2nd in AFC West
REMAINING SCHEDULE: DEN, @ARI, OAK, @PIT, SD
BREAKDOWN: As you saw above, the Chiefs have a big test this week as the Broncos come to town. It’s nice to have a game against Oakland left, but as we just saw, beating the Raiders isn’t a given for this team. Arizona is fighting for home field advantage and the Steelers and Chargers will be battling for playoff berths as well. Not an easy road for KC.
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
CURRENT STANDING: 7-4, T-2nd in AFC West
REMAINING SCHEDULE: @BAL, NE, DEN, @SF, @KC
BREAKDOWN: It’s a tough schedule for San Diego coming home. Every single game they have left are against playoff-caliber opponents and three of them are on the road. At least they get Tom Brady and Peyton Manning at home, if that’s really any consolation.
OAKLAND RAIDERS
CURRENT STANDING: 1-10, last in AFC West
REMAININGSCHEDULE: @STL, SF, @KC, BUF, @DEN
BREAKDOWN: Oh, Raider nation…you poor bastards.

Borderlands 2, Parks and Rec, The Wire, Patriots Football and
Jim Lawlapalooza Reflections (From the Outside)
Have I mentioned that Steam is, literally, the greatest thing ever done for video games? Well it is, and one of the amazing byproducts of my revitalized love of PC gaming is revisiting games that I initially may have rushed through. Case-in-point: Borderlands 2. I don’t know how, but my first play-through of this game left me wanting a lot more. I think that was probably due to the fact that, because my brothers aren’t into the games I am I was playing solely by myself. What a mistake, as multiplayer Borderlands 2 is like a completely different game. It’s incredible how high the replay value becomes once you have three other people participating in the mayhem. Again, if you’re on steam, hit me up and let’s play.
I’m happy to report I’ve officially jumped on the Parks and Rec bandwagon. I added the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness to this article because it is literally the moment in this show where I finally got it. The comedy here is solid, layered and full of good characters. I’m now on season 3 and the inclusion of Rob Lowe and Adam Scott is really enjoyable, particularly Rob Lowe, whose comedic chops are on full display here. Once again, glad I stuck it out for this one as it’s becoming a staple in the house.
For those of you keeping track at home, I’m rounding out season 2 of The Wire in prep for our upcoming commentaries. I said it on the BingeCast earlier and I’ll say it here again; give season 2 a break. David Simon went in a totally new direction and gave viewers something radically different than anything done on TV before or since, but that’s far from a bad thing. Frank Sobotka is a great character and provides a strong connection to the normal working class in Baltimore, something very important to the overall journey of the series. I’m actually looking forward to the season 2 commentaries more than season 1, call me crazy.
I can’t believe football is finally here. I’m so ready for this season I can’t stand it, and at 1:00pm this Sunday my ass will be planted firmly in front of a gigantic TV, hopefully with a nice brew and some great company. I’m over the moon for my boys’ roster this year, and the (surprise) announcement that Gronk is good to go for game 1. While Gronk seems to be the lynchpin for the offense in the eyes of many analysts, I try to remember that last year, with a core of rookie receivers and a decimated defense, the Pats still made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game. The consistency of this team is, at this moment, unrivaled across the league, and I’m ecstatic because of that. I’m also glad that Jimmy Garoppolo is getting the backup job this year behind Brady, as I’ve never been too impressed with Ryan Mallett’s production whatsoever. Garoppolo already looks like he understands the mechanics and timing of a football game better than Mallett ever did. I’m not saying the kid is the next Aaron Rodgers, but he looks solid and willing to learn, two traits that made Tommy Touchdown the champ he is today. I’m calling it now, AT LEAST 14-2 this season.
I wanted to take a minute to acknowledge this past weekend’s Jim Lawlapalooza. First of all, thank you gents for the call during the show, it was great to be there in spirit. Second of all, and to all my fellow BingeFans/Staff, how fucking FUN did that look/sound? I’m there next year, by hook or by crook, no doubt. Here’s hoping the boys come out to New York so we can go get drunk outside the New York Public Library and quote Ghostbusters lines. Check back later this week for our daily blogs and a new Strain commentary (which kicked major ass this week!). Binge on!
Okay, so maybe the title was a little misleading as this is more of a preview of more previews to come if that makes any freaking sense, but the start of the NFL regular season is less than two weeks away as the Green Bay Packers and defending champion Seattle Seahawks square off on Thursday, September 4th. So what I’m doing today is giving you the itinerary on how I’ll be doing things here at Binge Media Sports for the upcoming NFL season.
We have 12 days until that season opener, so in that time I’ll be bringing you previews of each division. Every few days, check back and you’ll find a little breakdown of each team in each division. For example, you’ll check in and you’ll find synopses on teams in the AFC and NFC North, then the next one will be the AFC and NFC East and so on and so forth until you’ve gotten a little bit on all 32 teams.
And as you know I like to do, you’ll have a chance to vote on who you think will win each division, who you think will go to the playoffs, and who you think will win the Super Bowl. I’ll also be giving my thoughts and predictions and we’ll see how my picks do against yours.
As far as the actual season goes, come to Binge Media Sports each week to cast your votes on EVERY single game of the season. I’ll be listing my picks each week and I am issuing a challenge to my loyal readers. If after 17 weeks of games, your collective record is better than mine, I’ll let you decide some kind of dare or some kind of embarrassing stunt for me. How’s that for keeping you involved?
I’ll be back tomorrow with Working the Weekend with Luke and you’ll be seeing a lot of Binge Media Sports coming up as I get these previews rolling next week. Thoughts? Ideas? Stunts? Dares? Leave them below or follow me on Twitter and tweet @THElukenorris.
