The dawn of horror as we know it may be the best way I have seen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre described. Directed and co-written by a then upcoming filmmaker from Texas named Tobe Hooper, the original 1974 film tore through audiences and has had such a lasting impact on horror culture that filmmakers such as Rob Zombie and Eli Roth constantly cite it as their inspiration. But with three sequels and a myriad of remakes and retellings in its path, does the series deserve its place on the upper echelon of horror film series ever made? That’s what me, Matthew Goudreau, and Mik Duffy are here to discuss.
In 2013, nobody, I mean NOBODY, was clamoring for a new adventure with the killing family from Texas. But in looking at the Texas Chainsaw 3D‘s press materials, they finally seemed to of gotten the formula right. With his family torched to death by an angry Texan mob, Leatherface was finally left to his lonesome to wreck havoc, the same way his contemporaries Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger had. But once the movie was released, word had spread that they had once again struck out on telling a good story about the Sawyers. Will we feel the same? Listen to find out!
Also, me, Mik, and Matt finally put a (temporary?) cap on the series by looking at 2017’s prequel, Leatherface. Starring Lili Taylor and Stephen Dorff, as well as directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (2007’s Inside), the film once again had all the makings of a story told right. But do they? I will say, at least one of us thinks so, and it causes quite a stir among the others. Listen to find out who.
I must say, this series of movies could have been a painful experience to go through. Yet, I feel the three of us delivered quite a pack of unpredictable shows about them, and The Binge Movie Aftertaste’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Retrospective turned out so much better than I could ever have imagined. Thanks again to all for listening, and stay tuned to the Aftertaste for more retros, as well as a few surprises thrown in for good measure!
