Binge Movie Aftertaste – James Bond Retrospective w/ Matthew Goudreau and Adam Bunch: Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum Of Solace (2008)
Before Star Wars, there was Bond. James Bond. It is a film franchise that has inspired everyone in in the industry from Steven Spielberg to Christopher Nolan to Rian Johnson. Eight actors have (unofficially) played the character over its almost sixty years in existence. And there is another one coming out this April. So what better time for the Binge Movie Aftertaste to gear up and cover a franchise that has been requested for years. Myself, Adam, and Matt are going to fire through a gun barrel the entire 26 film franchise, cultivating in a review of Cary Fukunaga’s No Time To Die, which is being heralded as Daniel Craig’s final bow as the character.
After Die Another Day broke franchise box office records, star Pierce Brosnan was all set to reprise the role once again. But the problem was, producers weren’t ready for him. On top of developing the ill fated Jinx spinoff movie, financial difficulties once again reared their ugly head. But something happened that changed the course of the James Bond franchise forever. The rights to Casino Royale were finally in Eon’s hands. On top of that, the recently rebooted Batman franchise, now in the hands of Bond fan Christopher Nolan, was setting box office records of its own.
So Brosnan was out, Daniel Craig was in. Who you may ask? Well, that’s what audiences asked until Casino Royale made its debut on movie screens in 2006. But great word of mouth helped it surpass those box office takes of Batman Begins, and James Bond was now accepted by more than just action fans. People spoke about Casino Royale as if it deserved Oscars. Listen to our podcast to hear if we agree.
Now with a new star waving the PPK, producers were quick to greenlight a sequel. But instead of just their own financial struggles (the sequel’s budget was ‘slashed’ to $250 million) Bond was once again hit with a writer’s strike. Does the fate of Licence To Kill match what we feel about 2008’s Quantum of Solace?
