Kupka and I are back with the first Binge Music Cast of the year! I wanna shoot you so bad, my dick’s hard. If you don’t get that New Jack City reference then we can’t be friends.
We’re pretty excited and optimistic about the year in music. There have been quite a few offerings that we’ve dug in the first quarter, half of which we didn’t even feature here. Saul Goodman, we’re still finding our Music Cast footing. Shut up and enjoy!
Artists featured this week:
Kendrick Lamar
Houndmouth
Songhoy Blues
Benjamin Booker (again)
Olivia Jean
Here’s the opening song, of which I am making a bluegrass cover.
Take a look folks, this is it, the last week of a long grueling season and come Saturday night we will have a Champion. As you can see, at the time I am writing this on Tuesday Evening we have Habs To The Future all tied up with bullet club. In the event of a tie the victory would go to someone, since I’m not in it I stopped caring, so you two can figure that out on your own. The thing that sucks about this matchup, other than I’m not one of the two, is that no matter who wins, the goddamn championship is going to Canada. To save on shipping I may have Jim Law take it back with him after this year’s Lawlapalooza, you can then pick it up from his house. Fuckers. Congrats to the future Champ and a great big Nelson-like Ha Ha! to the loser, see you guys next season.
NHL Playoffs
Speaking of playoffs and championships it’s (what should be) everyone’s favorite time of year, NHL PLayoffs. What’s just as exciting are the final two weeks leading up the playoffs. As has been routine in the Western Conference there are playoff spots being secured, just not positions. Going into Tuesday Night’s match ups most teams had 3 games remaining and only 3 points separate 1st and 3rd in the Central Division and 4 pts from the number 9 (eliminated) and number 5 seeds. The Eastern Conference is getting pretty tight as well. SHIT IS CRAZY!!! Crazy fun too. If you’ve always wanted to dip your toe in the sport now is the time to do it. Especially the division round, the teams facing each other have played 5 times already this season and they’re in for at least 4 more. By now they hate each other, they know each other, and nothing would make each team happier than knocking the other out to advance a step closer to becoming (arguably) the greatest champion in sports. The Tuesday evening playoff picture is below and I’m sure you’ll wanna keep a look out for the playoff preview from Binge Media Sports.
Game of Thrones
Is back on Sunday. If you don’t know this yet now you do. That is all.
William Elliott Whitmore – Radium Death
So the only new music I’ve caught has been the new release from William Elliott Whitmore entitled Radium Death. A departure from the norm we get an electric offering from Mr. Whitmore and I’m happy to say I really dig it. I like it so much I actually hope he continues down this road for at least one more album. I think it shows a maturity to his playing and style and just gives us that much more of a variance to a pretty great catalog. Check out the video for the opening track “Healing To Do”, below.
That’ll do it for this week. Don’t forget to leave any comments below and follow me on Twitter @jekupka. Until next time, I leave you with this.
So last weekend I had a strange morning at the cineplex, I had to pour my own soda. Now don’t get me wrong, at any fast food restaurant I think it’s a great idea, but c’mon, a movie theater? Did we not just celebrate the entire movie industry with a 3 plus hour awards show. I think 12 hrs if you add the red carpet stuff. Movies are supposed to be magical. From the moment you enter the door to the building, to the ticket taker, and yes, even to the concession workers. You work in a movie theater for a reason, cause you get to see movies. You love movies. You want to experience every single thing about them. Even working in a movie theater.
The way the events unfolded actually had me pause in disbelief. I grabbed a bag of Reese’s Pieces put them on the counter and asked for a medium Cherry Coke easy ice. My normal movie going breakfast. He pulled out the cup and placed it in front of me and asked for my payment. Typically they fill the soda first, or someone else does it while I pay, what the fuck is going on? OH! oh. I thanked the three young teens behind the counter and made the joke about pretty soon the theater wouldn’t even need them. We all gave a little laugh, wished each other a good day and I turned and went to pour my own soda (oh look, pour your own icee too) on the way to my theater. While I walked away I heard one of the girls ask the others, “Could you imagine that, a robot taking your order?” Well I for one don’t want to.
Maybe it’s me being my old cynical self and it’s just that times are changing. Maybe. I just can’t see how that experience is anymore different than sitting at home, with a smaller screen. Is that really all we want to start paying for? The screen? If that’s the case I for one will surely stop giving my money. Between this and the assigned seating this is switching from going to the movies to, going to the theater. Theater with a self serve concession stand. Gross. I’ll catch it at the drive-in or wait for it to hit the local neighborhood theater. Until they try and destroy those as well.
The 2015 Fantasy Hottie League
In case you missed it we had our live draft for this year’s league and if you listened live, or caught up with this week’s podcast, I don’t think there was anyone who talked as much shit as I did, and yes, I plan on backing it up. Just be happy it wasn’t a true live draft with everyone picking their own picks. I would gaurangodamntee you 1st place. Anyways…
In comparison to last year, this time around everyone involved had a much better idea of how they should be picking. I don’t think there is one person without at least one member of The Big 3 as I like to call them (Avengers, Hunger Games, Star Wars), and that’s a good thing. It’s definitely going to allow for a lot more shit talking this season and that’s what any Fantasy League is about, shit talking with your drinking buddies. We’ve made some great strides into getting folks more involved and I think it’s only going to get better each year.
Good luck everyone, you’re gonna need it.
Fantasy Hockey League
Speaking of Fantasy Leagues, our inaugural Fantasy Hockey League has started the first round of playoffs and I wouldn’t have it any other way then by facing off against the resident Mexican. Who is at this moment losing to me 5-1. You can check out the the midweek totals for the first round below. Thanks to first time losers Ice Holes and Red Wings 66 for playing, enjoy your early start to spring. Follow along here.
I’m all for playing again next year so let me know if any or all of you are in so we can get this rolling when the time comes.
Music
Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp A Butterfly
Kendrick Lamar has a new album out and it is entitled To Pimp A Butterfly. It will most likely be the best album of the year, it is amazing start to finish and if you haven’t listened by now you need to correct that. I’m not kidding.
Houndmouth – Little Neon Limelight
So for the past 2 days I’ve been hearing a radio ad for a free show featuring a band from Southern Indiana called Houndtooth. Well this afternoon I said fuck it, let’s see if they are on Spotify and they were. Before starting their latest entitled Little Neon Limelight I saw that they had released an album back in 2013 as well. I gave the new release the first listen and wow. They have a very nice blend of folk, soft singer songwriter, country, rock and pop. A blend that I have a soft spot for lately, but there’s something about their voices that is especially nice to listen to. The vocal blend between the 4 is just amazing and the female vocal is perfect. Their debut is just as solid. I’m really pissed I’m not going to be able to make their free show but will be first to get tickets the next time they make it back to Chicago.
That’ll do it for this week. Don’t forget to leave any comments below and follow me on Twitter @jekupka. Until next time, I leave you with this.
So if you listened this week’s BingeCast you know that Moreno and I traversed a couple states to go catch J Roddy Walston and The Business in Lansing, MI. What we weren’t anticipating was this being a college show. We would have thought things through a little more. After engaging in an all day preparty we were halfway through the show as Sleepwalkers ended (they were pretty solid, you should check them out) and things were good, until they got stupid. Stupid fucking college kids with the bro mentality at a rock show where they just don’t give a fuck about anyone around them, AT ALL. Almost got into 3 fights in the course of 35 minutes. Then couldn’t find a decent bar nearby without running into a herd of young 20 year olds hopped up on adrenaline, Monster and who knows what else. And the next morning almost every damn restaurant in town was closed. Are you fucking kidding me? YOU’RE A COLLEGE TOWN.
We ended up at a greasy spoon, which wasn’t actually that great, the best thing was the cinnamon raisin toast. How do you fuck up greasy breakfast food Lansing, how? Yes I know I’m sounding old and cranky and maybe I am, or maybe you kids today just need to learn a little bit of etiq… nope, that sounds cranky too. Well fuck it, maybe I just need to find a different spot at a concert, one not in the first 50 feet of the stage. Or maybe people can just say excuse me. And the good diners can be open when it’s convenient for me. Alright, enough with the negative shit, has anyone noticed that…
THE FUCKING SNOW IS MELTING!!
I wish that would say “HAS MELTED” but unfortunately we got a bunch late and it’s taking more then a couple 40 and 50 degree days to melt all this shit, but it’s getting there. Also when we speak next it will be Spring and I for one and pretty damn excited. Golf courses reopen, Disc Golf courses reopen, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and back to grilling most of our meals. Funny how in 2 short weeks I went from yelling about winter to gleefully talking about Spring. Yes, that word is gleefully and it was the first one that popped in my head. Don’t ask me why.
The Wind and The Wave
I was late to this party (thanks to Moreno I finally made it) but I am becoming a VERY big fan of From The Wreckage, the debut album from the The Wind and The Wave. A little duo from Texas that I would describe as a cleaner/poppy flipside to Shovels and Rope. I’ve only been able to give it a few listens (such as while I’m writing this) but I enjoy what I’m hearing and look forward to some quality time where I can really soak it in. I recommend it especially if you like the lighter side of folk/rock/country/pop.
That’ll do it for this week. Don’t forget to leave any comments below and follow me on Twitter @jekupka. Until next time, I leave you with this. You’re welcome.
I guess you could say I was a bit inspired this week as I left a voicemail for the boys on the Binge Cast about movie music. Color me obsessed but I’ve thrown together a list of ten albums you should have on your regular rotation of movie soundtracks. There’s no particular order but here they are:
I’ve heard Master and Commander referenced as some “seriously frumpy white-people shit”, and that might be true (I’m not a doctor), but I love the flick and the soundtrack for its grace and subtlety. In a film about war on the high seas, Master and Commander has a surprisingly improvisational feel, which is something that I think lends itself very well to the music selections used therein. Favorite track: J S Bach Prelude.
In the early days of my film studies, Tarantino and Rodriguez were my gods. I’ve always felt their soundtracks (Tarantino’s a little more than Rodriguez’, overall) were unique pieces of musical fusion, evoking feelings and memories of rich cultural history without nailing you in the face with the references. Desperado is a criminally underrated soundtrack, featuring some truly badass action-film riffs that immediately call back to the flick. Favorite Track: Cancion Del Mariachi.
Easily the most horrifying collection of music I’ve ever listened to, The Shining’s soundtrack is all about fucking with what you knew was normal. Fans of the movie will remember the violin shrieks, blaring horns and droning notes that send chills down your spine well, but listening to this independent of the film actually makes it a scarier movie. This Halloween, try playing this album on a loop at your house and see how many kids are brave enough to go up to your door. Favorite track: Lontano.
Out of all of Wes Anderson’s films, The Darjeeling Limited consistently comes up as his most divisive. I’ve never understood why, because I’m the oldest of three brothers and I feel like he absolutely nails the tone and feel of that experience with this film, but to each his/her own. Wes is always great at choosing songs from diverse genres that somehow all sound like the same band is playing them, and he does it here as well. The trifecta of Kinks tunes coupled with the more traditional Indian tunes and the French Les Champs Elysses are all great songs that I revisit almost monthly. Favorite track: Les Champs Elysses.
Sergio Leone knew how to make shit epic. While the Dollars trilogy showed just how well he can merge music with a moving picture, Once Upon a Time in The West proved that his previous inspiration was talent and no fluke. This is a great and criminally underrated score that deserves more love. Favorite track: Bad Orchestra.
The Departed is remembered for a lot of great reasons, but no one ever talks about how great the music was. While the main soundtrack encompassed a diverse array of pop and rock hits that worked phenomenally well, the score was great in its own rite. The way the music centered around the main theme’s tango, as if all the characters were dancing around one another, was to me a fantastic stylistic choice. Favorite track: Cops or Criminals.
I know I’m double dipping here with Wes Anderson flicks but this is another one that people just don’t seem to talk about. Seu Jorge’s Portugese covers of David Bowie are just incredibly pleasing to my ears. While some of his stuff was featured in the film, an entire album’s worth of covers is on display here. Great stuff for anyone looking to rediscover Bowie, The Life Aquatic or great, acoustic music. Favorite track: Rock N Roll Suicide.
It’s easy to overlook how brilliant the music in this movie is. After all, South Park is known for its vulgarity, not its show-tunes, yet this flick’s score was so well put together and phoenitically pleasing that it’s on my regular rotation. Plus, anyone who can make a group marathon song about farting needs to stand up and be counted. Favorite track: Kyle’s Mom Is A Bitch.
Another double dip (I love Kubrick, sue me), A Clockwork Orange excels in its strange-ness. While the high-class orchestral themes stand in stark contrast to the ultra-violence on screen, the soundtrack is actually a unique ride all on its own. The insanity/disturbing nature of Alex DeLarge comes through in musical form when the album transitions from I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper to something like the William Tell Overture. The soundtrack enhances my enjoyment of the movie, and hopefully it will for you as well. Favorite track: Singin’ in the Rain.
I mentioned it in my voicemail to the boys this week but The Last Waltz is world-class stuff. When I was younger, I didn’t like this because I couldn’t understand why this was such a big deal. This flick and especially the music have aged exceptionally well and this remains as probably my favorite concert film (probably). You get The Band, Bob Dylan, Uncle Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Diamond and so many more I can’t recall them at the moment, and you know what’s wild about the lineup? They all absolutely KILL it. This is a great film and a great soundtrack. Favorite track: Up On Cripple Creek.
Boom, and just like that, I’m out! But before I go, I just want to say two things. One, Ammon is a man of honor and I respect him immensely for totally owning that shirt. Two, here’s another glorious angle he sent me:
I’ll admit, in the year 2015, Cripsin Hellion Glover is a weird actor to become obsessed with. However, when you have three little kids discovering the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy on a loop and my revisiting of HOT TUB TIME MACHINE last week in time for the sequel, it becomes almost necessary. The most recent thing I remember seeing him in was FREAKY DEAKY in 2012 although IMDB has him listed for three movies this year, another shooting, and a mini-series about the creation of the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team) with Bill Paxton. Dude still works to pay the bills but there’s so much more to uncover of his fascinating career.
Aside from the two hugely popular titles I gave above, Glover has done some solid work in films like RIVER’S EDGE, WILD AT HEART, WILLARD, and BEOWULF. There’s also endless bit parts where he steals the show in films such as THE DOORS, DEAD MAN, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLINT, NURSE BETTY, and the CHRLIE’S ANGELS movies. Still, after feeling obligated to run down the man’s resume, it’s his off-screen antics that have made the man an enigma for the better part of three decades. And it all starts with Late Night with David Letterman.
His first appearance was in 1987, while promoting RIVER’S EDGE, and has become infamous for fans of Letterman. Well before Joaquin Phoenix pulled his shtick, Glover seems to come out in character (for what, who knows) and proceeds to be the most awkward human being on the planet. Soon enough he’s challenging Dave to an arm wrestle and almost kicks the host right square in the face.
In 1990, Glover came back to the show to promote his new album and Letterman wanted nothing but answers regarding his first visit. While not as awkward as the last meeting, Glover stills struggles to hold it together for longer than one sentence at a time.
The next time he appeared was to promote RUBIN AND ED and adds to the legend. Letterman wants (needs?) Glover to admit he was wearing a wig the night he almost kicked him and it’s literally like pulling teeth.
The Letterman couch aside, Glover added to his weirdness by writing some books that were essentially odd pictures and words jotted down periodically about the art of catching rats, recorded some aforementioned music, and directed a film with an entire cast of people with Down syndrome.
The inevitable legacy of the man, however, will forever be tied to BACK TO THE FUTURE and his portrayal of George McFly. Maybe even more so, his absence from the sequel. There have been many tales about why he didn’t return but the best description about what really happened came from the man himself in this interview with Opie and Anthony.
Whether you believe him or not, the lawsuit he describes in the interview is a huge deal as it changed the landscape for many producers and directors when it came to using the likeness of actors in future projects. The dude sued Steven Spielberg and won. If that was all he had ever done it would be something to brag about.
Thus ends my homage to one of the strangest men to ever grace a big screen. If I’ve helped anybody in a younger generation find an ounce more of appreciation or influence in the man, my work here is done. If not, shut up.
Let’s clear something up. We live on a planet where the majority of us reside in areas that experience these things called seasons and if you’re lucky enough, you get to experience all four of them like I do. So during the time of year, let’s say middle of November through the middle of March, where the Northern Hemisphere is furthest from the sun it’s gonna get a bit cooler, some may actually say it gets cold. THIS HAPPENS EVERY FUCKING YEAR. Get a warm coat, some gloves, a hat, and maybe even a scarf and shut the fuck up. I get it, it’s not 90, you know how I know? Because you’re not complaining that it’s too hot. That and I can see my breath when I’m outside. If I have to listen to one more person talk about how cold they are I may actually stab them. If you don’t like it move, to the equator, because if you haven’t been paying attention even states south of the Mason/Dixon are getting their fair share of wind, rain, snow, and ice. This isn’t anything new and it’s never gonna stop, well so far as I can tell so dress warm, shut the fuck up, deal with it and move on. There are far more important things to bitch about.
The Hottie Fantasy League
I did not win, but n the plus side I had the second highest point getter in it’s inaugural year. However, you add that and two big fat fucking zeros and you know what you get? Being able to say you didn’t finish in dead last among the staff. Now I think the Hottie Fantasy League is a good thing but I think it can be better. For those of you who listened when our good buddy Matches Malone and I did Reels, Racks, Records, and Rants (The 4R Podcast), we also thought it would be a good idea to have a movie related fantasy league but unfortunately it never came to fruition. Well I think I may have found a way to make something that’s good even better. The major problem with the current format is the amount of entries and viable options and I think the final standings show that perfectly. Now what I’m about to propose would essentially change it from a Hottie Fantasy League to a Movie Fantasy League, and while I’m perfectly okay with that others may not be, but that’s why I’m writing about it so y’all can discuss. Basically it would break down much like a football fantasy league:
QB – Movie
WR – Actor
WR – Actor
RB – Actress
RB – Actress
RB/WR – Actor/Actress
Defense – Movie
Kicker – Movie
Make sense? Good. How does this make things better? I believe it will create a much tighter race where the point system (which works just as it did for the HFL) will really make the entire year, and especially awards season, that much more exciting. I mean, I don’t know about you, but after about September did anyone really even give a shit, aside from Said? I know I didn’t. Think about it, the first 4 picks could be Star Wars, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford. Those first 4 people IMMEDIATELY feel much better about this season then they do all of last season. Fuck, we can even get real crazy and change one of those slots to Director making things even more fun. So that’s my idea, if folks like it great, if not, oh well, just thought it would make for a much more interested, interactive, and shit talking league than we had this year.
Kid Rock – First Kiss
While writing this week’s entry I’ve been listening to Kid Rock’s new album First Kiss which dropped this past Tuesday. While it definitely isn’t anything to write home about I think it’s been one of his better efforts of recent memory. It feels more complete and flows fairly well although I really don’t hear a true radio single, which is okay. At this point in his career I think you either like him or you don’t. I am one who does. I’ve been listening to him since the late 90’s when he started getting some radio play and quickly found him to be a very talented artist who is able to cross many musical lines. The man has made albums that have covered the genres of rap, rock, country, and at times even blended them together. During the last decade plus, however, he’s been concentrating more on the rock n’ roll/country sound and although alienating some fans in doing so has still been quite successful. So if you’re a fan of his I think you’ll enjoy the new album and if not, I’ll try to find something better for you next time.
That’ll do it for this week. Don’t forget to leave any comments below and follow me on Twitter @jekupka. Until next time, I leave you with this…
Here’s a shot of the league standings as we get deeper into the second half of the season
As you can see your truly is in 6th place while the resident Mexican is in 4th. Shameful this is but it’s only by 1 point. Hopefully this changes very soon.
Corrosion of Conformity / Lupe Fiasco
I’ve come across another couple of albums to recommend this week. First for my headbanging brethren we have an album that I totally missed last year, IX by Corrosion of Conformity. I stumbled upon this yesterday while searching for Blind (also by C.O.C.) on Spotify. Not a bad go for my first listen. Pretty much what I expect from them and that’s okay. The other album is entitled Tetsuo & Youth by Lupe Fiasco. I’m not the most well versed Lupe listener but I would have to say this is one of his best efforts. With a variety of guests and some pretty amazing musical accompaniment this is EASILY another early entry into my Top 10 of the year.
Linux As A Second Language
For awhile now I’ve been wanting to sink my teeth into another operating system and when it’s a choice between a $600 (low end) Mac or a free Win XP machine that I can give a second life with a Linux OS I think you can guess which one I’m going to go with. I finally got to installing Mint 17.1 on that old XP box last night and they ain’t bullshitting. If you have an old Windows XP machine that has become quite tired and you only need a PC for the basics it’s time to upgrade. This is the first time I’ve touched Linux since I was in school and it has come quite a long way in those years. The GUI is a blend of the Mac OS and Windows and VERY user friendly. Aside from the slow load time from the CD (which is actually a full working copy of the OS allowing you to preview before installing), installation took between 5-10 minutes and everything worked perfectly. I was also able to create a share folder that both my Windows 8.1 PC and my wife’s MacBook were able to see, access, and write to without any special permissions or tweaks. I only have about an hour of playtime with the OS and look forward to spending much more time with it. With the availability of add-ons/extensions and the such allowing you to run Windows programs it may even become my primary OS. Only time will tell. If any of you readers are experienced Linux users I would love some advice on where to go for learning materials and the like, if there are any that have interactive tutorials that would be even better.
That’ll do it for this week. Don’t forget to leave any comments below and follow me on Twitter @jekupka. Until next time, I leave you with this…
It’s nice to see that logo back, isn’t it? After starting a series on the Oscars a few weeks back, I’m finally back with part two. But I’ve really got nothing to review this week. I’m literally watching my thirteenth movie of the weekend and none of them have anything to do with this year’s Academy Awards. No, I’m seriously watching my thirteenth movie of the weekend as I’m sitting here typing these words right now. I’m not going to call it laziness on the lack of original material this week, but instead…okay, I wanted a lazy weekend. Sue me. I’ve been on my couch for the majority of the past two days, watching the strangest mix of flicks, and just biding my time until tonight in anticipation of the premiere of Better Caul Saul. But I do have something fun for you.
As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, I’m really into the fan vote around here. I usually save it for Binge Sports, but I really do like getting you involved in the things I do around here, and my coverage of the Academy Awards is no different. Therefore, I have taken the time to put together a poll for each category at the Oscars. And yes, I’ve even included the ones that a lot of you don’t really care about, but guys like me pretend that we actually know something about them. I mean, of course I know that the film from Poland is exponentially better than the one from Estonia. But hey, it’s still fun to make a guess anyway. And I was 21 for 24 last year, so I’m just putting that out there for absolutely no reason at all. So just have some fun with it over the next two weeks. And hey, it actually does take time to build 24 polls, so I actually do feel like I worked on something original. And the Oscar goes to?
