Binge Movie Aftertaste w/ Ashley Fleetwood
Welcome one and all. For this very special edition of the Binge Movie Aftertaste, I finally bring someone on the show whom I have been looking to speak to for quite some time. But before the guest comes on, I spend the first five minutes or so (ok, two) talking to myself -and you people- divulging what this particular episode is about. Luke Norris and Jim Law in your younger podcast days, I don’t know how you do/did it.
Now on to today’s guest. If the name Ashley Fleetwood doesn’t ring a bell, think back about a year. When Star Wars The Force Awakens was gearing up for release, Ashley was going through the most harrowing experience anyone could ever go through. Daniel Fleetwood, the one she married, was succumbing to the evils of cancer.
Given two months to live in the month of July -a full five months before Episode VII’s release date- the idea of just one more set of minutes spent watching a new Star Wars film with the person she loved was too hard to pass up fighting for. Therefore, the #ForceForDaniel campaign was begun.
Listen to this very special interview where Ashley discusses where the actual idea for the hashtag came from, and how far Star Wars fandom went in helping make this dream come true for this truly special couple. But Ashley makes it clear that seeing the movie ahead of time was not as much Daniel’s wish as the media made it out to be. To find out what the actual purpose behind this campaign was, you’ll just have to listen.
I want to personally thank Ashley for taking the time to speak to me about this truly inspiring story. Yes on set hijinks and making fun of bad special effects make-up is fun. But when I have the opportunity to do a show like this, it makes all I do for this site well worth it.
May the Force be with you all.
