PETEMSEE IT THIS WEEKEND – 6/23/16
This column will introduce you to the most popular movies that are coming out in theaters this weekend and why you should go see them. Which one will you see?
Free State of Jones
Reasons to see this:
Based on a true story, Academy Award Winner, Matthew McConaughey stars as Newton Knight, a farmer during the Civil War who forms a group of rebels to fight against the Confederate Army. Keri Russel also stars as Serena Knight, Newts wife. Directing is Gary Ross. Ross has directed Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, and The Hunger Games. So, if you are Jonesing for a historical, true story, action, drama picture, then go check this out.
Independence Day: Resurgence
Reasons to see this:
Welcome back to Earf? And welcome back, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner. The cast however, says goodbye to Will Smith, while bringing on some newcomers, Maika Monroe(It Follows), Joey King(The Conjuring), Liam Hemsworth(Not Thor), and of course, Anthony J Sacco of BMFML fame. Rolland Emmerich returns to direct his summer blockbuster, alien invasion sequel. Hopefully, Emmerich can make his own resurgence, (e.g., 10,000 BC, 2012, and White House Down). “We will not go quietly into the night, again! We will not vanish without a fight, again! We’re going to live on, again! We’re going to survive, again! This weekend, we celebrate our Independence Day: Resurgence.”
The Neon Demon
Reasons to see this:
Are you a fan of Nicolas Winding Refns’ films, Bronson, Drive, and Only God Forgives? Well, he’s back with The Neon Demon, a dramatic/psychological thriller starring Elle Fanning. Fanning plays Jesse, a model trying to make it big in Los Angeles. Jesse moves into an apartment with other models, well, these aren’t just any models. These are blood sucking women, who will do anything to secure their longevity, beauty, and relevance. The Neon Demon also stars, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jena Malone. So, if you’re not walking on any runways this weekend, then be a model citizen and run away to the theater to catch this thriller.
The Shallows
Reasons to see this:
Its almost Shark Week! Blake Lively stars as Nancy, a surfer who is attacked by a great white shark. Stranded on some rocks and 200 yards from shore, Nancy has to survive with all her might to get back to the beach. There are only 3 other cast members listed: Óscar Jaenada(The Losers), Brett Cullen(LOST), and Sedona Legge. The director is Jaume Collet-Serra, who has directed 2005’s House of Wax, Orphan, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. Don’t be shallow, go see a shark movie.
