Binge Movie Aftertaste – Batman Retrospective w/ Jack Falvey IV
Here we are again, Bingers. Time to tackle a franchise for your listening pleasure. Though this time, we will be tackling two at a time. Sort of.
Let me explain where I’m coming from here. For our special lead in to Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, I decided to look at the two characters surrounding it by asking two other guys from the site, who also happen to be huge fans of their respected characters, to come on the Aftertaste and discuss them both at length.
First up, Batman. And doing the honors of dissecting this character with me is the New England Patriots loving, Pulp Fiction addict (cue echo) JACK VALLEY. Listen in as Jackie Boy and I go over each portion of Bats in his media conquering pedestal.
Some of the questions we go over here:
- How did Jack become such a big fan of the character?
- Just how big WAS Nicholson’s contract to appear in Batman, and why was he paid for movies he wasn’t even in?
- How much does the Halle Berry starring Catwoman fit into the DC universe, if at all?
- What does Batman ’66 have in common with Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises?
- What is Jack’s LEAST favorite characterization of Bruce Wayne?
- What is the biggest missed opportunity of Tim Burton’s two directed Batman films?
- Who else was paid to NOT be in Batman Returns?
- What does Batman & Robin have in common with The Dark Knight Rises?
- Is the relationship between Wayne and Gordon in the Nolan films similar to how it was in the comics?
- How’s Nolan’s characterization of Scarecrow?
- What is the’George Bush Theory’ that surrounds The Dark Knight?
- How do we feel Batman Vs Superman Dawn of Justice looks?
So click that little download button on the bottom of this page and get ready for a bat of a good time. Gross.

Great retrospective guys. Loved it a lot as I too am a huge Batman fan. Very interesting. I also love that someone finally said Batman Forever is the worse Batman movie cause I totally agree with that.
But I did just have a quick comment that I was curious if either you guys have a opinion on.
Ok so Batman V Superman is a new reboot for the Batman character. It is also a sequel to Man of Steel, a movie that basically stole it’s tone from the Nolan Batman Trilogy and infused it into this new universe. So do you guys think that correlation is a detriment to the movie (having to keep in line with a series that is not part of its continuity) or do you think it boosts this movie as inspiration? Or do they just throw that out and go a totally different direction? (Which I’m not convinced Zack Snyder has the talent to do).
Anyway just an observation I was curious about. Honestly a little less exited for the Super Jesus retrospective but still looking forward too it.
And I couldn’t agree more with Jack, if this movie does Batman justice (no pun) it’ll be the only way it is a success. Because the rest just looks terrible.

I will say this: I like the fact that, in some bizarro way, Nolan’s universe informs Affleck’s characterization (at least from the trailers we’ve seen). I like the idea of a world-weary Batman and where they’re going. I don’t give a fuck about Superman. I love the first 3rd of the first Donner film as I think that is an absolutely perfect “origin of a superhero” story. The rest of the film is ok, but doesn’t hold a candle to that brilliant opening. Man of Steel was sort of a let down for me, so I think at the end of the day, as you stated and I said in the podcast, if it serves Batman well then we all win.
