Ok guys so I haven’t finished the whole podcast, for the record I am loving it and I also loved this movie, so I don’t know if you have touched on this angle yet but I have a theory…so bear with me as I give some space for spoilers…

    Spoilers in 5…

    4…

    3…

    2…

    1…

    Ok…

So, We know that someone found Luke’s lightsaber at some point after he lost his hand on Besbin. It would follow logically that whoever found the lightsaber would also have found Luke’s hand…

It seems to me that both in Rey’s Force vision and in the final scene of the movie there is a decent amount of attention focused on the fact that Luke lost his hand. When (presumably) Luke kneels down to put his hand on R2-D2, the centerpiece of the shot is Luke’s robotic appendage. And when Rey encounters Luke on the mountainside, Luke removes his hood and there is a definite focus on Luke’s fully robotic hand. Now these could both be in service to fans but to me this seems like the filmmakers are basically saying “REMEMBER, LUKE LOST HIS HAND. IN CASE YOU FORGOT.” So…

There is also what could be considered a throw away line that Kylo Ren says when asking about the loyalties of the new Storm Troopers and he mentions something about how they should have used Clone Troopers. Again, a line that could be considered fan service to reference the prequels, but since they seem to be going out of their way to NOT reference the prequels why say anything about clones at all?

So my theory is about Rey. And I think you can see where I am going with this. Rey is not Kylo Ren’s twin sister, she’s not Luke’s biological daughter, but instead Rey in fact IS Luke Skywalker. Rey is a clone made from Luke’s hand that was recovered from Besbin, making her Luke’s “daughter” much in the same way Boba Fett was Jengo Fett’s “son”.

Now before we write this off as totally bullshit, and trust me I am not 100% convinced of this theory either, but it seems to me to be the only thing that makes the story choices make sense, here are some notes I have about the theory…

    1) How does Rey know how to use the Force so quickly? Well, if Rey is in fact Luke, she could have the ability tap into what Luke already knows about the force. The Force would see Rey and Luke as the same person, this would allow Rey to access Master Level Force abilities as an untrained Force user.

    2) Why does the lightsaber call to Rey? Sure it could be calling to the offspring of Luke or Leia as they share the same genes. But since the saber belonged to Anakin first and never gave Luke any visions when he acquired it , this doesn’t seem to be the case here. Also, Rey taps into visions that could only have been seen by Luke. (ie. The hallways in Cloud City, Luke’s scream when losing his hand and learning Vader is his father, Yoda telling Luke how the Force works, Luke witnessing Kylo Ren’s betrayl.) It would seem to me that, to borrow from Harry Potter a bit, that the lightsaber is calling out to its true owner.

    3) These are just a few parallels that are interesting…. When Rey first sees the Millennium Falcon she calls it “garbage”, much in the same way that when Luke first sees it he calls it “a piece of junk”.

When Rey and Finn get on the Falcon, Rey tells Finn that the gunner station is down the stairs which, assuming Rey has never been on the ship before, directs Finn to the same pod that Luke sat in during the Death Star escape in A New Hope.

Rey Force grabs the same lightsaber out of the snow just a Luke does in almost the exact same angle and timing.

These are just minor similarities sure, but they seem to indicate that Rey is a parallel of Luke, even knowing things that he would know.

    4) Finally, and I think most important. We know R2 basically shut down after Luke went into exile. When we get to the Resistance base, R2 is not active. But when does R2 finally come back online? When Rey returns to the base after the battle. R2’s scanners recognize Rey as Luke and wake him up from low power mode. If he’s waiting for Luke’s daughter…why? And if not then he just turns on for no reason at all.

While I do not think this theory is for sure correct, the more I think about it the more sense it makes to me. We know Han has some knowledge of who Rey is but not in a father/daughter way. And why would Luke knowingly abandon his daughter on a distant planet the same way he was abandoned. Also, it seems to me that Kylo Ren is older than Rey so the twin thing seems like its out of the window.

Also, if the reveal IS in fact that Luke is the father of Rey, then that means that Episode VIII will have THE EXACT SAME REVEAL as Empire Strikes Back. Literally the exact same one. And I just can’t believe that they would do that. I think they’ve done their fan service enough in this movie and now are going to move off in their own direction, but if Rey is Luke’s daughter then……..yay.

Anyway, that’s my two cents on the subject. Can’t wait for 8 and love the podcast. Later guys…

Couldn’t Luke just have made a new saber, with a different color? Is it really more likely someone found it still working after it fell on an abyss than he just decided to make a shit ton of new sabers to really get the hang of it? Maybe it’s just one of the ones he gave to his wimpy apprentices, and for all we know, baby Rey was one of his trainees.

There’s probably a book or something that states jedi can only have one swordy, but don’t forget all that crap was tossed out by Disney.

He did make a new saber…after he lost this one in Empire…that’s why its green in Jedi as opposed to this one which is blue.

I don’t really understand your argument. It doesn’t even make sense from a good/terrible screenwriting point of view.
