Binge Movie Aftertaste w/ Howard Berger; On-Set Makeup Effects Stories and a Fantastic Four Review w/ Jason Morris
Makeup effects has always been one of the hardest and most time consuming things a person in the film business can do. When we set out to do a show about the art of makeup effects, Jason and I wanted to get the best storyteller we could, as the process itself is a taxing one that is sure to yield many stories. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you Academy Award, Primetime Emmy, and BAFTA Award winning artist Howard Berger.
Before we get to Howard, Jason and I share stories on our own experiences working with makeup effects. From fake vomit making the actor actually vomit to violent allergy-inducing fake blood, Jason certainly warms us up for what’s to come.
Once we get Howard on the line, the stories cease to pause. In this hour plus interview, Berger fills us in on everything from how his working relationship with Quentin Tarantino started and continues to endure, how Robert Englund’s never ending storytelling is easy to withstand because of how nice and kind he is, great Kill Bill stories, on set movie making with fake buffalo, and much, MUCH more in this most informative and extremely formidable conversation. Extra thanks to Berger for not only coming on with us, but also sticking to it because of his being under the weather. I have a feeling we just touched the surface of what Berger has to share, so you can expect him back on the show in the future. Maybe when one of his estimated fourteen things are getting ready to be released. Oh speaking of which, Howard takes extra care to endorse the upcoming Christmas theatrical release of The Hateful Eight because of its special release on 70 mm. As he says, this is ‘the way films were meant to be seen, and not on a 3 inch screen on your phone.’
After hanging up with Berger, Jason and I decided to share our thoughts on the comic book film flop Fantastic Four. Though when I came up with the idea of talking about the film, I figured we would, as always, be on opposite ends of the street with our opinions of it. Turns out…we feel the exact same way. Oh well. It made for a ten minute conversation. Not all of them can be winners.
Oh…I would also like to thank Jason for making it on the air as he too was sick. Wait, no I don’t. It’s his bi-weekly job. As for you, what are you waiting for? Listen NOW!
