(Working On A Title) Wednesday – Zombie, Spaceship, Wasteland, Paddle Your Own Canoe, Run The Jewels, Dutch
I hate Turkey. But I do like…
Zombie, Spaceship, Wasteland
A Book by Patton Oswalt that I’ve had for quite some time but just never got around to reading. More a collection of tales of life rather than a full autobiography, it is a quick and entertaining read and a must for any fan of his. You can purchase the book here.
Paddle Your Own Canoe
Paddle Your Own Canoe is the autobiography of Nick Offerman who most of you know as Ron Swanson, the meat eating, government despising Man’s man from Parks and Rec. An entertaining autobiography told in a “The Lesson Here Is…” kind of way. The book tells of Offerman’s life beginning with his early childhood all the way through when he submitted it to the editor. What I liked most about this book are the life lesson supplements that follow each tale of Offerman’s which are as entertaining, if not more so, than the story of his past. If you’re a fan of the autobiography, comedy/comedians, or the man himself you will not be disappointed with this very quick and entertaining read. Buy it here.
Run The Jewels
I was going to make this it’s own separate review for When The Music Hits but I’m a bit short on time this week so I thought I’d put it here. The show opened with DRT (David Ruffin Theory) who were quite entertaining just as were followers Ratking, and Despot. But goddamn, when Run The Jewels (Killer Mike and El-P) hit the stage shit went off. I’ve spoken about Metro before, small venue, a Chicago staple that has seen it’s fair share of both small time and big time artists, and I’ve seen at least a dozen shows of varied genres there over my years as a concert goer but I have never seen a show like this. From the moment they hit the stage the energy in that venue went up like I’ve never seen before and you could tell that every single person in that venue wanted to be there. From opening track Run The Jewels to encore Angel Duster they gave the fans everything they had and for the second time that night. Originally set to only play a 9pm show, a second, earlier show was added due to high demand. Both of which sold out. This show was by far the best hip-hop show I’ve seen, that best I’ve ever seen at Metro and is in my Top 5 of all time. This is not a show to be missed. You can check out the rest of their tour dates here and can get a free copy of their latest album here.
Dutch
One of my favorite movies of all time and my preferred Thanksgiving movie, Dutch stars Ed O’Neil (Dutch), Ethan Embry (Doyle), Jo Beth Williams (Natalie) and Christopher McDonald (Reed). Reed and Natalie are the divorced parents of Doyle, a snot nosed kid who idolizes his father and seems to blame his mother for his situation, who is stuck at boarding school after his father tells him he has to cancel Thanksgiving for business reasons. Dutch, Natalie’s boyfriend, decides he wants to pickup Doyle from school so that he can spend the holiday with him and his mother and believes a little road trip will allow them to get to know each other better. When Dutch arrives Doyle is less than thrilled to say the least and must be “persuaded” to go with Dutch. What follows is a highly entertaining and heartwarming road trip movie given to us by one of my (and probably yours to) favorite writers John Hughes. If you’ve never seen this underrated flick I highly recommend checking it out. it will pair nicely with another road trip favorite, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for a nice little double feature.
That’ll do it for this week. As always any comments, questions, or concerns can be left below. You can always follow me on twitter @jekupka and until next week I leave you with this…
