Flashback Friday – 11/21/14 – Marilyn Manson
When The Music Hits Presents:
Flashback Friday
I think at this point it’s safe to say that 1994 was a pretty big year for albums that would have a lasting impact on me and this one is no exception. Although released in 1994 it wasn’t until January of 1995 that I was first exposed to Marilyn Manson on a little show called The Jon Stewart Show which aired on MTV. While watching them perform Lunchbox (one of my favorite tracks not only form this album but their entire catalog) I was taken aback by not only their look and stage show but also their sound. While I was becoming exposed to more and more music on a daily basis I had yet to encounter a group such as this and honestly originally wrote them off as some fucked up shit I wasn’t about to get into. Just check out the video below for an insight as to why.
After their cover of the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) hit the radio waves and I found there was a relationship with the great Trent Reznor I was intrigued and decided to give their debut album a chance. Goddamn am I glad I did. From the opening track Prelude (The Family Trip), which I later discovered/realized was from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, through the hidden bonus track of an angry parent’s answering machine message there isn’t a track that I ever skip and more times then not I immediately hit the play button again right after the album ends. It is by far their best album and gives an interesting, to say the least, view of where America was and heading through their eyes. A must own for any rock/metal/goth/industrial fan. Don’t believe me, give it a listen. At least for the fantastic intro.
