Monday Morning Moreno
Vice TV
I’m sure most folks have been on the Vice train for some time now, especially since jumping on HBO, but the show is still turning out incredible content at a steady pace. I was first turned onto Vice when co-founder Shane Smith guested on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Smith goes into some of the most dangerous countries in the world in order to tell that country’s story. It’s what true journalism is all about: an object narrative. The first documentary I got hooked on was the Vice Guide to Liberia, where Smith talks with some of the craziest warlords including General Butt Naked, General Rambo and the less intimidating name (yet no less scary) Charles G. Taylor, Liberia’s former president. It’s amazing to see parts of the world that still doesn’t have bare essentials such as running water, indoor plumbing, and XBox. There YouTube channel is chock full of short documentaries that are constant source of entertainment and enlightenment. Here’s one of my favorites, in which Vice heads to Colombia to find out why young dudes fuck donkeys as a rite of passage.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Speaking of entertaining (I really wanted to segue with “speaking of donkey fucking”), in this week’s Binge Cast, Law and I talk about how great Guardians of the Galaxy is. I haven’t been that surprised by a movie in a while. I had no interest in seeing it, especially considering everything I saw of it from day one looked like dog shit. Damn, was I wrong. One thing I didn’t touch on in our review is how serious and overly dramatic (sometimes melodramatic) these comic book movies can be. I get it, being a superhero is a lot to deal with. Saving the world is such a big deal. With GoG (I guess that’s how we’re referring to it), even with the entire goddamn universe about to be annihilated, I never felt brought down by it. As much as I dig the Avengers (and I do), I had so much more fun with GoG. Being that there isn’t big name comic book heroes in it is a huge reason why I loved it as much as I did. The soundtrack, the humor, the characters, the action, the friendships born out of necessity, all worked for me in a big, big way.
But I’ve hit my quota of comic book movies I’ve seen and enjoyed this year (1) so the rest can fuck right off.
Jim Lawlapalooza
Speaking of donkey fucking, for the past few years Law has come down to Chicago from the Great White North to kick ass, and drink a lot of alcohol. And he’s all out of bubblegum. I don’t know. What happens is I take Law to get pizza (which he loves), then we tour the various bars in and around Chicago, and hopefully meet up with listeners of the podcast. One year we did turtle races and took in a midnight screening of The Room (where he fell asleep), another year we ate mushrooms and hit the drive in. This year, not only is Law and Mrs. Law coming down, but the motherfucking sounder twins PeteMC and TM (I fookin’ love you Jon Snow) just told us last night that they’ll be making their way to Chicago for an epic Jim Lawlapalooza weekend. Saturday August 30th we’ll be hitting the city and drinking our faces off and would love for any of our audience to show up and drink with us. Details of the where and when will be given as we get closer to the date, but bank on the 30th if you’re so inclined. Epic Jim Lawlapalooza will be fucking epic. Live sounders ya’ll!
Here’s Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey. He’s the best fucking cowboy I’ve ever seen. Fuck you, Billy the Kid.
