American Horror Story: Coven – Ep 2
THE KEEP UP
American Horror Story: Coven
Episode 2 – Boy Parts

First of all, I’ve been reading of people complaining about the first episode referring to Frankenstein’s Monster, that is not the case, this is necromancy – which has been around far longer than the story of Frankenstein
.
With that said, I am thoroughly enjoying where this season is heading, even though I haven’t the slightest inclination what we’re heading to. We’ve learned some new things this week, one of them being the fact Cordelia not only has a husband, but she wants a child, the other being that LaLaurie was not poisoned, or not a witch herself, but rather given the “gift” of eternal life, before being buried alive.
Let me jump back a little bit to the beginning of the episode; Misty Day is alive and well, and wandering the swamp lands. She comes across some alligator hunters, doesn’t like what she sees, and resurrects the gators to kill the two men – another fantastic cold open. Jump back into the academy as two detectives arrive to question Zoe and Madison regarding their involvement with the bus crash. After some minor interrogation, Zoe folds and spills the beans, but luckily Fiona is there to save the day. With her vast assortment of powers, she is able to make the detectives give up their questioning of the girls and eliminate them as suspects.
We learn that Fiona has LaLaurie bound and gagged in her bedroom, and up until this point I was convinced she was a witch herself, but that wasn’t the case at all. As I said above, we find out that she is now immortal, and she tells Fiona that the voodoo queen Marie was responsible. In a great scene, Fiona pays Marie a visit at her local hair salon; the conversation between the two is very interesting. They don’t know each other, but Marie not only knows that Fiona is a witch, but that she is the Supreme – who was around back in Salem. There is some banter back and forth with Marie accusing Fiona of learning her skills from a voodoo practitioner during that time. Ultimately Fiona wants what Marie has – the gift of everlasting life, but isn’t Fiona already immortal, or just doesn’t age very quickly? I’m very interested to see what happens with these two, as they are obviously the most powerful characters in the show.
This show wouldn’t do itself any justice without at least one crazy moment per episode, and “Boy Parts” gives us the crazy. Madison’s reasoning for this is beyond me, but for some reason she thinks that resurrecting Kyle will “make up” for killing all of those guys in the bus. When she and Zoe arrive at the morgue, body parts are scattered across the room, and after some colorful commentary from Madison, they being to gather the “best” parts from each body, and sew them all together, along with Kyle’s head. As the spell initially fails, a security guard comes in and Kyle finally “wakes up” and the two are able to escape. In the car outside, Misty is waiting inside, and we learn that Zoe’s powers have been leading Misty to her; we aren’t sure why at this point. Another noteworthy moment would be Cordelia and her husband trying to conceive a baby, which involves fire, big eggs which hatched baby snakes, and then turn into very large snakes, also the consumption of each other’s blood. Nothing good can come from a baby being conceived this way, there have been references to black magic/satanic rituals already in the episode, and my guess would be some form of demon or even Antichrist.
The episode concluded with Misty showing Zoe how to properly heal Kyle, and explaining to her that they share some connection, most likely because Zoe can take life, and Misty can bring back life. I really hope Misty comes back to the academy and isn’t just a secondary character, everything about her is very intriguing.
I have nothing negative to say about this episode, as it continues to build on the back story of the women but doesn’t divulge everything. Just like previous seasons, we’re obviously leading up to something big, and the journey to that point is going to be very fun and very crazy, and a lot of people will die along the way. We keep being reminded that the academy’s purpose is to protect the girls, so I think it’s safe to say we’ll have some sort of modern day witch trials, one could only hope.
