BATHROOMS
By Steve Wood
Here we have four scenes from four different classics, all of which take place in a bathroom, and all offer an important message for each of their respective films. Sure, there are more, but these are my favorite.
Full Metal Jacket
When you think of this movie, you think of the outrageous insults spewed out by the great R. Lee Ermey, and then of course the culmination of said insults. It’s not certain whether or not Pyle had mental problems before boot camp, or if he was just an overweight victim of excessive verbal (and some physical) abuse. Regardless, you felt bad for him even after the famous scene.
American History X
Danny looked to his older brother Derek as a father figure, blindly following in his footsteps which would ultimately be the cause of his demise. Not having any real opinions of his own he lived his teenaged life the only way he knew how – a white supremacist. When Derek is released from prison, Danny eventually sees that his way of living has been completely wrong, and looks to the future as bright, and is excited to start over in a new place. But his blind hatred towards other races finally catches up to him in the final moments of this extraordinary film.
The Shining
Where to begin, the entire movie is riddled with mysterious imagery, hidden meanings and vivid hallucinations, and this scene are the culmination of everything. We meet Grady – the previous caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, and the man who murdered his entire family. This is by far the strongest interaction Jack has with one of the many ghosts in the hotel. One could argue that all of the ghosts were manifested by Jack, but if this were all in Jack’s head, how could he have possibly known about his son’s abilities?
American Psycho
This is quite possibly the most disturbing scene on this list. Patrick Bateman is completely insane, but not due to any sort of abuse, going down the wrong path, or cabin fever. He is a fully functioning person who sometimes needs to let his desires take over, and eventually consumes himself in them. He is a victim of conspicuous consumption, and needs to be the best in terms of physical accomplishments. His inner monologue here is very telling; his entire life is overly compulsive, and he is very narcissistic.
